Mobile TV is a convergence between mobile phone and digital TV services. It provides mobile phone users digital broadcast and multicast services through a specially optimized dedicate or shared network. Mobile TV allows mobile phone users to watch their favorite TV programs and enjoy many other mobile services within a single mobile device. From a business perspective, mobile TV is a promising path for mobile industry to evolve from a decades old voice centric revenue source to data services oriented business models. From a technology perspective, it brings the challenges in optimizing multimedia content, access network and air interface for a small-sized and power-limited mobile device. It is predicted the mobile TV handset market to grow to more than 105 million units by 2009 by the market research firm Visiongain. Mobile TV is widely believed to be one next big "killer application" in mobile industry.

 

In this tutorial, the state of art of mobile TV technologies and standards development will be explored. There are four sections in the proposed tutorial. Within the first section, an introduction to mobile TV is presented along with a snapshot of recent trials and market research highlights.  It is concluded with some key lessons and success factors we have learned from these trials and researches. In Section two, mobile TV is discussed from the technology perspective, where six core technical areas of mobile TV are identified and explained. These areas include the air interface, the network and the content optimization which are critical to the success of mobile TV. In each mobile TV technologies, detailed explanation, analysis and comparison are given among different mobile TV standards.  Following the technical discussion, the current status of mobile TV standardization and implementation is presented in Section Three. In this section, the key features of each mobile TV standards are captured and compared.  The pros and cons of each standard are discussed along with the technical merits and market acceptance. In Section Four, several issues in the future of mobile TV are identified and discussed.

 

In summary, this tutorial is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of mobile TV for a wide array of audiences, including mobile TV services providers, application developers, marketing managers and system researchers, etc. It includes not only the background information and standards activities but also some implementation considerations.
