Phone Box Closures

Phone boxes to be closed in South Lakeland (list below)

(please see note at the end for other districts).

If a box is to be closed it should have a notice in it. Not all do. Ignore the deadline given on the notice - it's probably wrong - but get your objection in quickly anyway, as the council is dealing with very tight deadlines.

Objections must be about individual phone box(es), so state where they are. You also need to give valid reasons. Ofcom give various examples, of which some are shown at the right of this page. You don't need to make a lengthy case, it just needs to be specific and can be quite brief. Eddie Clunan

Ofcom give various examples of grounds for appeal against closure.

They include:

ability to make emergency calls in case of a car breakdown "not all calls considered as emergency calls by the public are calls to the emergency services... For example ... roadside breakdown" **;

or collision (eg near an accident black spot);

proximity to other call boxes;

nature of the area "for example, a tourist area..." ;

"concerns about alternative access to telephone services for low population densities";

"poor, sporadic or the lack of mobile network coverage";

whether many residents in the area don't have land lines.

** " " means quoted from Ofcom documents.

Phone boxes to be closed in South Lakeland District

within the Yorkshire Dales National Park

also about 51 more, outside South Lakeland and within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Parish clerks should have details, otherwise your district council offices. I can try to help if you email but can't guarantee.

Other districts

The appeals against closures in their areas are being handled by the four district councils: South Lakeland, Eden, Allerdale and Copeland.

The description above is only for South Lakeland. For other districts please get the contact details from your district council offices.

The councils are dealing with very tight deadlines. If you want to make an appeal you need to submit it urgently.

The deadlines differ between the councils, and may be different for different locations.

Emails objecting to closure must be sent to the correct council.

You need to know which district the parish containing the box is in - for example the district to which you pay council tax.
