Hello!

My name is Chad Kittlaus. I am a Deputy Sheriff with the Pender County Sheriff’s Office and the School Resource Officer at Topsail Middle School.  I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Science from The State University of NY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and was awarded my law enforcement certification from Brunswick Community College, graduating at the top of my class.  I was sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff for Pender County in May of 2013 with the sole intention of becoming a School Resource Officer.

I find working with middle school students to be a very rewarding    experience.  They are old enough to understand what is going on around them but young enough to still be impressionable.  This time period is critical in their development because they are just now deciding what kind of a person they want to become.

My presence in the school allows students to develop a positive relationship with someone in law enforcement.  For every time a parent whispers to their child “you better behave or that man is going to take you to jail” I have an opportunity to show them that my job is about helping people to make better choices and being there for them when things are at their worst.

My presence in school allows students to feel just a little more secure in their learning environment.  They know that there is someone standing watch to make sure that no harm comes to them.

My presence in the school provides students with someone to talk with when they are concerned that something “is just not right”.   I work in concert with the school’s guidance counselors to assist students when there is something that they have seen or when there is something that is happening to them that they feel is inappropriate. I address bullying, peer to peer relationships, arguments, domestic violence, child abuse, neglect, suicidal thoughts, unsafe behaviors, drugs and internet safety just to name a few.

I am also available to parents to answer any questions they may have regarding concerns about their child.

I am continually pursuing additional training to better equip myself for the demands of my job.  I recently completed training and was awarded a certification in crisis intervention.  This prepares me to better understand and serve those individuals who are dealing with mental illness or special needs.  I have also received additional education and training in school violence prevention, active shooter response, child abuse and juvenile law.
