Breakfast Kick-Start - Postponed

As with our other projects future Breakfasts have been postponed until further notice.

We’ve all heard the stories of kids turning up to school each day without having had any breakfast, and there has been all sorts of reasons put forward for why this is happening, but one of our Edge Members, Rob Keanalley, thought it was time somebody tried to do something about it.

In an initiative supported by River 949 Radio Station, who have agreed to promote the events on radio the week prior to the breakfast and do live crosses on the day of the breakfast as well as attending with their promotions vehicle for giveaways when they can, Rob has rallied other members of the club to help him visit one Toowoomba based State School per month and cook up a breakfast for their students, parents, teachers and staff at the School.

As Rob said “There are far too many children going to school without a breakfast to kick-start their day and this is designed to help instil good healthy eating habits as well as help those who are less fortunate and perhaps can’t afford a breakfast at home. We have chosen Harlaxton as the first school to kick this off because a large number of their students not only don’t get a breakfast at home before school, but are sent to school with no lunches or morning tea either. A number of community groups provide additional support to the School to assist with these challenges. This is just a small way we can contribute.”

With help from a number of our members and sponsorship support from local business Sovereign Property Partners, the first breakfast was cooked up at Harlaxton State School on Tuesday the 18th of February and feedback from the School Chaplain was that this was the largest turnout of parents, students and staff at a school breakfast they have had to date and it was very well received by the School Administration and students especially.

“There was a lot of positive feedback supplied which reinforced the turn out we received, so both the School’s promotion of the event and that of River 949 certainly did the trick. Radio promotion grabs as well as the live cross from River 949 during the breakfast shows we received a lot of positive air time for our efforts.”

“It was very clear that the School’s demographic found significant benefit in this Breakfast Kick-Start and I witnessed several examples of entire families participating and being grateful to be able to do so. For me, personally, this was a touching recognition of the value of such an initiative which clearly touched a positive chord with the community.”

UPDATE: The second Breakfast Kick-Start was held on the 11th of March at Rockville State School and was a massive success with sponsorship support from Horizon Accounting Group.

The club would also like to recognise the support from our suppliers, Gray’s Modern Meats and Woolworth Kearney Springs, who look after us very well with produce at cost prices and special thanks to Pengally Trucks and Trailers for the use of their BBQ Trailer to cook the breakfasts.

The Milne Bay Military Challenge is over for another year - see you all again next year!
