The Saturday Tongan Education Program (STEP) provides free academic support to Tongan youth of all
ages in the Pomona Valley and Inland Empire areas.  Led by the Pomona College Asian American Resource Center’s (AARC)  Sefa Aina and leaders within the community, STEP brings together Tongan students seeking academic help and tutors from the Claremont Colleges. Several of the tutors are from the ASAM 189 class, Globalization and Oceania, which explores globalization in Oceania, with a focus on Tonga and Hawai'i.

Each Saturday, the tutors and students team up to work on homework, standardized test preparation, college applications, and more. Building strong partnerships with the community, STEP also helped the Tongan Community Services Center (TCSC) organize a health fair which included free mammograms and health education information in addition to 2010 Censusoutreach and immigration assistance.

Through the STEP program, the AARC and TCSC hope to build relationships with and expand services to the Pacific Islander communities of the Inland Empire.  For more information please contact aarc@pomona.edu or office@tonganla.org.
