Spring Region Meeting MS Division Sunday, April 30, 2017

Agenda:

  1. 1)  Suggestions for UIL judges with all from active and provisional list All together

  2. 2)  Draw for performance slots all together for each contest Billy All together, then ATSSB can split

  3. 3)  Region band audition process updates

  • No need to move one school over to other site to balance #s. One school went to wrong audition zone, so if we correct that next year, only difference of 15.
  • Will send everyone copies of music in packets like we used to due to all the miscommunication about which edition of books
  • Alto saxes will be put in morning schedule next year
  • Need to raise audition fee per student. Not an option. Region out of money due to having to hire way more judges than we are used to due to losing so many schools in region. Current fee is $8.00. ATSSB has in their rules that both HS and MS directors have to judge each other’s contests or pay for a proxy.........what do we think of this
  • Committee to help revise audition material, low brass etudes? How are we on scales? Almost everyone complained about low brass etudes being too simple. Scales adding more octaves to fl, possibly one more brass scale to a 2 octave
            4) Dates for next year’s region band clinic and concert
  • Move auditions back to November 11? Lopez and Driscoll? Lopez is confirmed.
  • Veteran’s day I know but shouldn’t be an issue since most assemblies on Friday for band students.
  • December clinic/concert @ Johnson HS? Johnson is happy to host. Opposite weekend of orch clinic/concert.......1st or 2nd weekend of December?
  1. 5)  Region band clinician suggestions for next year’s bands – need to hire ASAP to get good ones!

  2. 6)  Honor Band deadline for submission Wednesday, May 31

  • Entry fee is $250 this time mail to Bernard check address on-line and instructions
  • Recordings will be uploaded on-line this year! Be sure to read on-line instructions carefully!
  • Region 12 Hearing June 7 @ AHHS
  • Area E Hearing June 22/23 @ Medina Valley HS (another $350 for that entry)

    MS Region Band Music Update

    posted Aug 18, 2016, 6:55 PM by Ed Gonzales   [ updated Aug 19, 2016, 8:05 PM ]

    Dear Region 12 MS Directors,

Thanks to all those that have contacted me to ask questions or point out issues with some of the etudes on the audition list. Here are a few updates so far.

    1. Do not take any repeats (jump to all 2nd endings).
    2. In the French Horn Etude No.2 – End on the first note of m.16 (which is the last measure), do not take DC.
    3. On the French horn etude No.1, we are making an exception with this one due to the low range, so please have students take the 1stending on this one and stop at fermata.
    4. The bassoon and bass clarinet etude Etude No.2 are the same, so please keep tempo same for both at quarter note=85.

Please feel free to let me know sooner rather than later if you find any other things that are unclear. We will make these changes on the web-page as well for your convenience.

One last thing, please encourage all directors on your staff to let me know if they are not receiving emails from me, and also to sign up for the Remind text system. I’ve attached the instructions.

Thanks, and hope everyone is having a great week back and gearing up for your kiddos to have a great year as well

MS Region Band Info (from Kim Garza)

    posted Jul 20, 2016, 9:19 PM by Ed Gonzales   [ updated Jul 20, 2016, 9:19 PM ]

    Hi everyone,

I hope you all are enjoying the many wonders of summer! I wanted to send you all a quick update on a couple of things before our next region meeting. First of all, thank you to all who signed up to be on the zone committee to help realign schools in our newly formed region. We recently met to set the schools into two zones for our fall region auditions. I’ve attached the list for the two zones. Please check to see which zone your school will be in for the auditions. The two zones will each host a bit over 500 students at the auditions if numbers are close to past data. (Thanks to Bernard R and James H for past data and geographical help in putting this together!) We will discuss host sites and update you on all other important info to the auditions at the August meeting.

I also wanted to give you an update on the full orchestra meeting that took place at the end of the school year. There were many ideas presented on how to bring back the full orchestra region experience to our kids. The format will be presented at the upcoming region meeting to give you the full picture. I can tell you that it will be totally optional for your school to participate and there are many ideas to making this a more fun and rewarding experience for both students and directors.

Hope to see many of you at TBA and if not, see you all on August 6th at our next region meeting! Happy summer! J

    Kim

    CEDFA Mission and Goals

The Center for Educator Development in Fine Arts (CEDFA) promotes student achievement by providing professional development opportunities based on state and national standards in art, dance, music, and theatre.

The Fine Arts Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) are the basis for art, music, theatre, and dance education in K-12 Texas schools. The Center for Educator Development in the Fine Arts (CEDFA) promotes student achievement in the fine arts by defining and supporting quality TEKS-based professional development for Texas educators.

Guided by its Task Force, CEDFA has identified the following four goals and corresponding achievement strategies to direct the Center’s actions.

GOAL 1: TO FACILITATE SYSTEMIC CHANGE THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FINE ARTS TEXAS ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS BY:

      • evaluating, aligning, and supporting systems that promote student learning in art, music, theatre, and dance
      • demonstrating ways to use the TEKS in teacher evaluation
      • using the TEKS to select textbooks and instructional materials
      • developing and maintaining strong student assessment in the fine arts based on the TEKS
      • assisting policymakers in using the Fine Arts TEKS when designing and implementing a restructured teacher licensure system and the resulting teacher education programs.

GOAL 2: TO PROVIDE A COORDINATED, STATEWIDE FINE ARTS NETWORK THAT SUPPORTS LEADERSHIP IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FINE ARTS TEXAS ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS BY:

      • establishing a cadre of master fine arts teachers to serve as a resource for other teachers
      • providing quality personnel for professional development in art, music, theatre, and dance
      • conducting fine arts workshops across the state
      • providing relevant instructional materials and resources
      • establishing and maintaining a fine arts website for art, music, theatre, and dance educators
      • working with professional associations to ensure that their professional development offerings are aligned with the TEKS.

GOAL 3: TO STRENGTHEN FINE ARTS INSTRUCTION THROUGH QUALITY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE TEXAS ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS BY:

      • developing educators’ awareness of the Fine Arts TEKS and providing for thoughtful examination of art, music, theatre, and dance curricula
      • identifying instructional needs of teachers that correspond to the Fine Arts TEKS
      • selecting professional learning strategies and delivery systems appropriate for the students and content being taught
      • supporting teacher initiatives to develop and use new and effective instructional approaches, including experiential learning
      • demonstrating problem-focused models for implementing the TEKS.

GOAL 4: TEACHERS WILL INCREASE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN ART, MUSIC, THEATRE, AND DANCE BY:

      • relating instructional design directly to the content and skills of each fine arts discipline
      • using a variety of instructional strategies to develop learners’ critical and creative thinking abilities
      • providing exemplary student work at various developmental levels
      • teaching a variety of ways for students to reflect on and assess their progress
      • using references and resources to assist them in further exploration and inquiry.
