Math Club Activities Activities are based on providing an age-appropriate introduction to the most interesting mathematical ideas and how math concepts apply in our daily lives. Liking or being proficient at math is not required or even necessary. We will use stories, examples, games, puzzles, videos, and hands-on activities to explore famous unsolved math problems, number patterns in nature, prime numbers, topology, irrational and transcendental numbers, infinity, probability, the stock market, game-playing computers, game theory, behavioral economics, and fractals. We've introduced kids to famous women mathematicians, Lego robotics, coding, public-key cryptography, and artificial intelligence. We have great videos on black holes, time travel, Archimedes, the history of math, and the new animated videos Flatland and Sphereland, which explore spatial dimensions. For the returning kids in Group #2, we will watch parts of the fabulous NOVA programs "The Elegant Universe" and "The Fabric of the Cosmos", which explain the main concepts of 21st century physics using beautiful graphics and attention-getting narration. We'll also explore current developments in math, science, and social science as they arise throughout the year. |
