SPINIFEX HEALTH SERVICE
The Spinifex Health Service is an Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Service located in Tjuntjuntjara on the Spinifex Lands, 680km north-east of Kalgoorlie in the Great Victoria Desert region of Western Australia.
Our Health Service is managed by the Paupiyala Tjarutja Aboriginal Corporation, a non-profit community organisation with responsibility for the administration and management of Tjuntjuntjara. PTAC services a close-knit community with a population of around 180 to 220 people.
Spinifex Health delivers a comprehensive primary health service with a team of skilled clinicians and health professionals, including a Medical Director, visiting specialists, registered nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers. The Tjuntjuntjara Clinic supports regular visits by our Medical Director and Chronic Disease GP, visiting specialists and monthly GP clinics provided by the Royal Flying Doctor Service out of Kalgoorlie.
The people of Tjuntjuntjara are known today as the Spinifex People, the traditional custodians of 55,000 square kms of Spinifex Native Title Determination area. The community is situated 680km north-east of Kalgoorlie within the Shire of Menzies, approximately 8-10 hours’ drive from Kalgoorlie depending on road conditions. It has a resident population world-renowned Spinifex artists and hosts cultural business and other events that often attract several hundred visitors.
Since establishing Tjuntjuntjara within their traditional homelands in 1989, the community has steadily grown and developed into a stable and important focus for the traditional cultural cycles of Western Desert life. People from throughout the region with traditional attachment to the Spinifex Lands have returned to live at Tjuntjuntjara. Unfortunately existing community housing is already overcrowded and more houses are needed to address the environmental, health and social impacts of a growing population putting added pressure on old housing stock.
Despite the community’s isolation and remoteness, the Spinifex People's resilience and determination to live in country and provide strong local governance makes Tjuntjuntjara a unique community.
Tjuntjuntjara is an alcohol free community.
