Males have an important role to play in the planning of families and preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections – adherence to contraceptive methods increases when both partners are involved. The Implementing Male Services Community of Practice will provide a forum to support Title X clinic administrators and others in their efforts to improve and increase male services. For more information or to join this community, click here.
As you know, the federal Title X Program requires that all adolescents seeking services in Title X Family Planning Programs be provided counseling which includes encouragement of family participation in adolescents' decisions around reproductive health services and how to avoid or resist sexual coercion. Family Planning Program agency staff members are also required to follow mandatory reporting laws.
In our (CDPHE Family Planning Program) scope of work we submitted as part of our application for Title X funds for 2013 and 2014, we agreed to provide technical assistance and a required training about mandatory reporting, and the adolescent counseling topics - family participation and avoiding sexual coercion.
The Family Planning National Training Centers have provided an excellent webinar entitled Counseling Adolescents about Sexual Coercion and Abuse which is now archived as an independent study activity at the following link:
The training is free. There is a cost if CEUs are requested.
A summary of the training from the attached flyer: "This course provides effective prevention and intervention strategies to address adolescent and young adult sexual coercion and abuse. Participants will learn to create a safe environment that facilitates disclosure of coercion and abuse, frame questions to assess for both sexual assault/abuse and more subtle forms of coercion, and respond to disclosures in ways that support and respect adolescent clients and comply with reporting requirements." A great resource list is also provided.
To comply with our work plan with the federal Title X Program, we are requiring Family Planning Coordinators attend this training and provide the information to their staff members. Of course, clinic staff members are invited and encouraged to also attend. Please attend the training, at a time and date convenient to you, by March 30, 2014. We'll ask you to report the date you attended and the number of attendees from your agency on the Family Planning Quarter 3 Progress Report that will be sent out in April 2014.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
