GDM2setup

Since version 9.10 (Karmic Koala) it is no longer possible to modify the login screen. In previous versions of Ubuntu, this option was always available. Yet there is an option to modify the login screen. With a program called GDM2Setup, a number of settings of the login screen that could be modified as in previous versions of Ubuntu.
 
Since Ubuntu 11.10 GDM is replaced by LightDM. Click here to read how to install Simple LightDM Manager under Ubuntu 11.10.
 
GDM2Setup with the following modifications committed:
 
- Setting the wallpaper, themes and icons from the login screen
- The wallpaper can be replaced by an own wallpaper
- Automatically log in with a potential to set delays
- The list of users can be displayed
- The on and off the login sounds
 
GDM2Setup is not standard in Synaptic Package Manager. GDM2Setup to install the following steps are required:
  • Open a terminal window
  • Type the following command: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gdm2setup/gdm2setup
  • Press Enter and if needed, type the required password
  • Type the following command: sudo apt-get update
  • Press Enter again
  • Type the following command: sudo apt-get install python-gdm2setup
  • Press Enter again
If all steps are properly followed, there will be under System> Administration a new a shortcut called Login Screen (GDM2Setup).
 

NOTICE:
Before the program can work the following must be done first. If this step is not done, it is not possible to change the background of the login screen.
 
- Open a terminal window
- Type the following command: sudo mkdir /usr/share/images/xsplash
- Press Enter and enter your password
 
Now in the directory /usr/share/images a subfolder called xsplash is created. Without this subfolder GDM2Setup does not work properly. To check whether the folder is actually created, enter the following command in a terminal window: ls /usr/share/images.
 

Now change some settings with GDM2Setup. Through the shortcut under System> Administration, the program can be launched. The program only with with root privileges, so it asks for a password.
 
The program includes the following tabs:
- General
- Wallpaper
- Decoration
- Accessibility (not yet implemented in the program, tab is gray)
- Theme (not implemented in the program, tab is gray)
 
General tab
On the General tab The following settings can be changed:
- Display's the user list in the login screen
- Automatically login
- Delay login setting
- Login sound playback
- Restart button off
- Enable a banner
 
Wallpaper tab
On this tab it is possible to change the login screen background. Click on the Select new image button and browse for the new background image. This is the reason why to create the xsplash subfolder. If this subfolder is not created, it is not possible to change the background image.
 
Decoration tab
On the decoration tab, the following two items can be changed: GTK theme and icon theme. Which theme will be used is a matter of taste and preference of the user.
 
The other two tabs, Accessibility and Theme, are still inaccessible.
