A downtown pedestrian mall just east of the campus includes specialty shops and restaurants that offer international and gourmet cuisine, boutique fashion shops, and a lively nightlife.

Two nearby cities make up the Iowa City metro area, which has a total population of about 100,000. Coralville, adjacent to Iowa City, offers hotels, restaurants, and shopping. The 1.2 million square foot Coral Ridge Mall offers more than 120 specialty shops, five department stores, an ice-skating rink, and movie complex.
