INITIAL CONSULTATION:

During this session, you will be asked a number of detailed questions about your current condition and your medical history.  This is in order to gain a thorough understanding of your main complaint, lifestyle, diet and emotional well being.  This information will then be used to formulate a diagnosis and an individual treatment plan specifically designed for your needs.

Pulses will be taken on both wrists, your tongue will be examined and if appropriate a physical examination will occur to ascertain areas of muscular tension and pain.

Please wear loose clothing and bring with you a list of any medication you are currently taking.

TREATMENT:
Fine, single-use, pre-sterilised, disposable needles are then used at specific acupuncture points on the body.  Please be aware that these points may not correspond to the area of the main complaint but are designed to treat the underlying cause of the condition.

As well as needling it may be necessary to combine other treatment techniques to assist with your recovery:
    • Moxibustion - heat is applied to an acupuncture point or area using moxa (a therapeutic herb) to warm and relax muscles.
    • Tuina - this is a Chinese style of therapeutic massage and can help relieve muscle tension and stimulate acupuncture points by using pressure.
    • Cupping - glass cups with a vacuum seal are placed onto the skin to stimulate blood flow and relax muscles.
    • Guasha - this involves scrapping the surface of the skin with a round-edged instrument and extravasates blood and metabolic waste congesting the tissues and muscles, therefore helping circulation giving pain relief.
AFTER TREATMENT:
The majority of people find acupuncture to be a relaxing and calming form of treatment.  It is possible to feel a little tired or sleepy and it is best not to undertake any strenuous or demanding activity after treatment.  Where appropriate lifestyle or dietary advice may be given and if necessary referral to another healthcare professional for specialist care may be suggested.

With treatment you may feel benefits after just one session but often a course of 6 to 10 treatments is recommended especially for long standing conditions.  Treatments are usually once a week to begin with and then spread out over increasing intervals of time.
