NeTS Program Updates
The 2016 fiscal year is coming to a close soon, and we are busy processing award actions. Please remember to submit your annual reports on time.
The NeTS program was involved in a major White House announcement (https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2016/07/15/fact-sheet-administration-announces-advanced-wireless-research). The NSF Advanced Wireless Initiative (https://www.nsf.gov/cise/advancedwireless/) aims create four Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) over the next five years in cities across the country. Three solicitations, two NSF Challenge announcements, and two workshops notices were featured in the announcement, among others.
New Solicitations and DCLs:
1. NETS: The new solicitation for NeTS is posted under NSF 16-579 (https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=12765). The deadlines for both NeTS Large and Medium programs is October 19, 2016 this year. The Smalls are due by November 16, 2016.
2. PAWR: As part of the Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) program, a call for establishing a PAWR Project Office has been issued (NSF 16-585). A webinar on this topic will be held on July 28, 2016 at 10:30 AM ET. Questions will be answered about the entire Advanced Wireless Initiative, in addition to the PAWR program. To attend the webinar, please sign up at the Program page (https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505316). Pre-proposals are due by September 20, 2016.
3. NSF-VMWare Partnership: NSF and VMWare jointly announced a solicitation (NSF 16-582) on Software Defined Infrastructure as a Foundation for Clean-Slate Computing Security (SDI-CSCS). A webinar on this topic will be held on July 28, 2016 at 1 PM ET. NSF and VMWare will answer all questions about this program. To attend the webinar, please sign up at the Program page (https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505298). Full proposals are due on October 5, 2016.
4. NSF-Intel Partnership: NSF and Intel jointly announced a solicitation (NSF 16-586) on Information Centric Networks targeting the Wireless Edge, the ICN-WEN program. A webinar on this topic will be held on July 28, 2016 at 3 PM ET. NSF and Intel will answer all questions about this program. To attend the webinar, please sign up at the Program page (https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505310). Letters of intent are due by September 19, 2016.
5. WiFiUS: The joint US-Finland Wireless Innovation between Finland and US solicitation (NSF 16-587) has been released. More details can be found on the program webpage (https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505037). Full Proposals are due on October 17, 2016.
6. Campus CyberInfrastructure: The Campus Cyberinfrastructure (CC*) program, NSF 16-567, supported by the two CISE Divisions of Computer and Network Systems (CNS) and Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI), is accepting proposals. NeTS researchers will find Tracks 3, 4, and 5 of this solicitation of particular interest. See program page for additional details (https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504748). Full proposals are due by August 23, 2016.
7. CRII: The CISE Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) program (NSF 16-565) targeting early-career researchers is accepting proposals across all CISE disciplines. See program page for additional details (https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504952). Full proposals are due by August 10, 2016.
8. DARPA SC2: DARPA has recently released the details of competing in the Spectrum Collaboration Competition (SC2) Challenge (https://spectrumcollaborationchallenge.com/). Information Day is on August 10, 2016. Today, NSF published a Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) announcing support for academic researchers to participate in the SC2 Challenge. See DCL for further details (https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16114/nsf16114.jsp). Attend the DARPA Information Day to learn more.
Upcoming NSF Workshops (in August - December timeframe):
Ultra-Low Latency Networks workshop – Date: Oct/Nov 2016 (TBD) (Organizer: Eytan Modiano, MIT)
Large-scale networking platforms “Communities of Practice” Workshop – Date: Oct 2016 (TBD) (Organizers: Morley Mao, Univ of Michigan & Ivan Seskar, Rutgers Univ.)
