2006 Targa Florio Centenario

In 2006 Cor and I went to Sicily. It was the 100th birthday of the famous Targa Florio road race. To be honest the revival meeting was poorly organized by a local rally club. Despite all their efforts only a few big names showed up and just a hand full of cars that made history there. In fact, the best parts were the days before the revival race and the trip back home, with a detour through the French Alps. The Col de la Bonette (alt. 2715/2860m.) is the highest pass in Europe accessable by car, even higher than the Passo dello Stelvio (alt. 2757m.) in northern Italy. Where the Stelvio is like a staircase the climbing to the top of the Bonette is more smooth.

Unfortunately PhotoBucket is showing the pictures in reverse order :-(

The same days there was the Giro di Sicilia event. We ran into a couple of participants and decided to chase them. A little later the driver of the Marcos waived us through but we immediately got stuck behind a Panda of the Italian police...

Our last stay overnight was in Gap. We did the 1,300 kms (800+ mls.) back home in one day, all the way with the top down. The Spider proved itself to be a car that easily does both high mountain passes and extended drives on the highway.
