---Club # 242 Jane Higgins with World Championship first place medal and best lifter award 2019 IWF World Master Championship Olympic Lifting Meet Montreal Olympic Park 8/16/2019 - 8/24/2019 Jane Higgins, age 70, competed in the women 49K weight division. World record Results: · Snatch- 28k · Clean & Jerk 38k Joe and I left Lebanon on Wed, Aug.14th, heading to Montreal and the World Masters Weightlifting Championships. I was going with high hopes and greater expectations. I was going with one goal in mind—to break the existing and set the new world records. Earlier in June, I had been to the Pan American Masters meet in Orlando, FL and, it was upon returning home, that a seed was planted in my mind. I had already been accepted into the invitation-only Worlds’ meet, but, at that point in time, I just wanted to go to experience a world meet (a rarity for most people), and get an awesome t-shirt. With that seed planted, I was all in. There was one snag, though- I would have to compete in a lower weight class (49k, not my usual 55k). This meant I needed to lose at least 4lbs, which is harder than one might think when you are 112lbs. For 2 months I followed a diet with the right percentages of protein, carbs, and fat. Curiously, when you really want something, it’s not so hard. You just do it. Meet day finally arrived on Friday. At weigh-in, which occurs 2 hours before the lifting begins, I came in at 48.65k. Whew, I made it! One box checked…on to the next. My anxiety level was sky high. Warm ups felt heavy and I couldn’t control my nerves. When my name was called for my first lift, I was shaking inside. But, to make a long story short, I got through my lifts and in the process, set 3 new national records and 3 new world records. I also was awarded the “Best Lifter” award for my age group which consisted of 9 lifters in 7 different weight classes. I felt so proud that I, this 70 year old grandma, had set this lofty goal and saw it realized. Awaiting the medal ceremony, many things passed through my mind: the camaraderie I have with my fellow women weightlifters of the US and Canada, the appreciation I have for all my Thor’s Stone Athletic Club members for their friendship and encouragement, my awesome training partners at AnyTime Fitness in West Lebanon, and my incredible coach Carl Wallin who has been mentoring (and putting up with) me for 7 years. When I finally stepped up on the podium, I felt complete joy and a huge dose of relief that I, this aforementioned 70 year old grandma, survived a totally overwhelming experience…and with gold medal results. 2019 PanAmerican Masters Weightlifting Championships Orlando, Florida May 28, 2019 Jane Higgins Age Group 70-74 Weight Class 55k (111 lbs) Snatch - 1st place 29k (63.8 lbs) New National Record Clean & Jerk - 1st place 39k (85.8 lbs) New National Record New PanAmerican Record
