Know your Pennsylvania Trout

Rainbow Trout (female pictured)

Member of the salmon family.  Dark spots on a light background with a faint pink stripe in the female and a darker stripe in the male.  Males become brightly colored when spawning.

 

Palomino Trout

Member of  the salmon family.  Varries in color from bright golden yellow to a faded yellow color with a faint pink stripe.

 

Brown Trout (spawning male pictured)

Member of the salmon family.  Dark spots on a light background.  Males become brightly colored with yellow/orange belly during spawning. 

 

Brook Trout (spawning male pictured)

Member of the char family.  Light spots on a dark background.  Pennsylvania's only native trout.  Males become brightly colored with red/orange belly during spawning. 

 

  Tiger Trout

This is a cross between a brook trout and a brown trout.  There are two distinct color phases.  One with the char family traits being dominant with light markings on a dark background as in photo above.  The other with the salmon family traits being dominant with dark markings on a light background as in photo below.
