New Insights into Immune System Drug Development

By combining laboratory studies with computer data, researchers are finding out how a common protein delivers its warning message to cells when an infectious agent invades the body. The discovery is significant because such biologic prowler alarms cause the body's immune system to jump into action for combating the infection. An understanding ofthe workings of this process can lead to better treatments for diseases that occur when the immune system overreacts or ignores the infection alarm.

Artificial Vision Device

The Learning Retinal Implant system was developed by Intelligent Medical Implants AG (IMI, Zug, Switzerland; www.intmedimplants.com), a neuro prosthetics device company. In an earlier multi-site European clinical study performed with a single electrode system, independent investigators reported that 19 of 20 completely blind people (95%) were able to see a small point of light. These blind individuals had no visual perception whatsoever, yet almost all of them were able to see with the simulation of this single electrode sytem, according to Stephan Rietiker, M.D., excecutive board member and CEO of Intelegent Medical Implants.
