Admission criteria and deadlines>>

BSc Biotechnology

Duration:
3 years.
Eligibility:
The eligibility criterion is essentially 40 percent (the minimum percentage may vary from state to state) in PUC/10+2/Intermediate/equivalent with science subjects.
Procedure:

Admissions are either through an entranceexam by the university/institution or percentage based. Many State universities offer a BSc degree in Biotechnology like Bangalore University (Karnataka), Chaudhary Charan Shing University, Meerut, (Uttar Pradesh), Kakatiya University, Warangal (Andra Pradesh), Madras University, Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Osmania University, Hyderabad (Andra Pradesh), Patna University, (Bhiar) andmany others. A sizable number of private institutes and universities are also offering this course.
 

BTech/BE Biotechnology

Duration:
4 years.
Eligibility:
The minimum qualification for admission is a pass grade in the final examination of 10+2 system or its equivalent with science background. For the BTech program at the IITs there is no prerequisite of biology at school level for admissions.
Procedure:

The admissions to these IIT undergradutae programs is through an all India competitive exam- the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The admissions to the BTech program at the IITs is held once a year in July through the JEE conducted on an All India level in April/May. The admission is offered on the basis of one's choice vis-a-vis his/her All India Rank in the JEE.
    Where as students to other universities or institutes are selected either through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), or the common entrance exam conducted by the state goverments. IIT Kharagpur offers a BTech degree program in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering while IIT Chenani and Guwahati gives a BTech degree in Biotechnology. Since 2004, IIT Kanpur has started offering a BTech degree in biological sciences and BioEngineering. IIT Roorkee has started a BTech (Biotechnology) course in 2005.
    Besides the IIT, several other institutes and universities offer a BE/BTech Biotechnology course. For example the Anna University in Chennai has been offering a BTech program in Industrial Biotechnology since 1992. Some other universities offering BTech (Biotechnology) courses include Bharathidasan Institute of Engineering and Technology, Tiruchirappalli; Guru Gobind Singh University, Delhi; Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (BTech Chemistry and Bioengineering); UP Technical University, Lucknow, Vellore Institute of Technology.Vellore (Tamil Nadu) and many more.
 

MSc Biotechnology

Duration:
2 years.
Eligibility:
Candidate with Bachelor's degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in Biological, Agriculture, Veterinary and fishery sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering, Technology or Medicine (MBBS) or BDS with atleast 55% marks are eligible for the All India Biotechnology entrance exam conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University.
    At other universities students should have a BSc degree with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks with chemistry or biochemistry as a compulsory subject and any one optional subject like Botany, Applied Botany, Zoology, Environmental Science, Sericulture, Biotechnology, Genetics, etc.
Procedure:

The Jawaharlal Nehru Unibersity, New Delhi conducts an All India Combined Entrance Examination, on behalf of over 30 universities, for admission to MSc program in Biotechnology/Msc (Agri) Biotechnology/MVsc (Animal) Biotechnology and MTech Biotechnology.
    The students are admitted to these universities through an All Inida Combined Entrance Examination, conducted by JNU in May every year. While the admissions are either percentage based or through an entrance exam conducted individually by other universities/institutes.
    At present there are 30 MSc courses in general biotechnology, seven in agricultural biotechnology; one in medical biotechnology; two in marine biotechnology, one in industrial biotechnology and three courses in neurosciences running in various universities in the country which are supported by the Department of Biotechnology.
     In addition to the DBT supproted post graduate courses, many universities, private colleges and institutes are also offering masters program in biotechnology.
 

MTech Biotechnology

Duration:
2 years.
Eligibility:
This is open to cadidates with a BTech/BE/B Pharma degree in relevent disciplines. A valid GATE score is a prerequisite to enter theMTech program at the IITs. Admission is also allowed in the MTech programs for the sponsored candidates from the industries as well as research organizations and hose admitted need not have qualified GATE. The MTech program is open to students from all streams of science, engineering medicine and pharmacology .
    For the five year integrated dual degree MTech courses in Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology at the IITs, studentsare eligible to enter after completation of the 10+2 with science.
Procedure:

The admissions are either through the joint biotechnology entrance exam conduted by JNU or through GATE.
     IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur offer a five-year integrated dual degree MTech course in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology with the support of DBT. IIT Chennai offers a similar integrated MTech courses in Biotechnology.
     MTech Biotechnology program are offered by Anna University, Chennai and Universtiy of Technology, Kolkata and IIT Kanpur with the support of the DBT. An MTech degree in Bioprocess Technology is offered by the University institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. This course is also supported by the DBT. Students with bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, pharmacy, chemical technology with GATE are eligible and the selection is based on the GATE scores plus the ICT written testand interviews. The Birla institue of technology (BITS), Pilani also offers ME degree in biotechnology.
 

MBA Biotechnology

Duration:
2 years.
Eligibility:
Students with a qualification inlife sciences, natural sciences, vetinary science, ayurveda, allopathic medicine, engineering, etc are eligible to apply. The University of Pune pioneered a unique two-year fulltime MBA program in biotechnology in 2002. This was the first such program by an Indian university or institute in the country. The syllabus is based on the requirements of the industry. About 60 percent of the syllabus covers the managerial aspect and the rest covers the nitty gritty of biotechnology. The favorable response to this course has led many institutes to start a MBA biotechnology course.
 

Bioinformatics Courses

Bioinformatics, an offshoot of biotechnology, has been lately attracting a lot of attention. This has led to specialized BSc/MSc and BTech courses in this branch. Bharathiar University, Comibatore and Pune University, which has a centre of excellence in bioinformatics, offer a two-year MSc courses in bioinformatics. The Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University has been offering a BTech course in bioinformatics scince 1999.
     DBT supports a one year course (Advanced Diploma in Bioinformatics) in five Indian universities - Calcutta University, Jawaharlal Nehur University (New Delhi), Madurai Kamaraj University, Pondicherry University and Pune Univesity.
    The intake for these courses is based on All India Entrance Exams that are conducted by the respective centers. Apart from the DBT supported courses, the Bangalore based Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology offers a 16-month postgraduate diploma course in bioinformatics.
    The Bioinfomatics Centre (BIC) at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, a pioneer in bioinformatics education in the country, offers a PhD program in bioinformatics. In the past few years, many private institutes have also started offering BSc/MSc Bioinformatics courses like Noida based Bioinformatics Institute of India, Delhi-based Amity Institute of Biotechnology, The Jay Pee Institute,etc.
 

PhD Programs

India boasts of a network of research institutes spread around thecountry established both by goverment and private sector. Student wanting to pursue an active career in biotech research can enter any CSIR, ICAR or ICMR lab depending on their qualification and area of specialization. The basic qualification required is a post graduation degree with a CSIR/ICAR fellowship and/or a good GATE score.
 

CSIR

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the goverment body to promote scientific research has a network of 38 laboratories and 39 field stations spread across thecountry to undertake R&D in several disciplinary professionals.
    CSIR holds national level joint CSIR-UGC Examination (NET) normally twice every year, one in June and another in December. This examination determines the eligibility of Indian nationals for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for appoinment of Lectures in Science and Arts.
    Considering the emergence of new specialized disciplines and their need in drug R&D, CSIR has recently permitted fresh engineering and medical graduates and M Pharma candidates with a valid GATE score to avail CSIR fellowships for pursuing a research career,in addition to CSIR lateral entry as Senior Research Fellow. Besides, the various national laboratories hold a written examination/interview for selection of research fellows to work in grantin-aid projects and research schemes.
 

ICAR

ICAR promotes science and technology programs in agriculture research and education and carries out research directly through ICAR institutes and national research centers, project directorates and also in association with the State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) through the all India coordinated research project systems. This vastnetwork of ICAR has manpower of about 30,000 personnel out of which nearly 7000 are engaged in active research and its management. 30 SAUs employ about 26,000 scientists for teaching, research and extension education;of these over 6000 scientist are employed in the ICAR supported coordinated projects.
    The Agricultural Research Services (ARS)/National Eligibility Test (NET) examination is conducted by Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board (ASRB) (Krishi Anusandhan Bhavan, Pusa, New Delhi) for filling up vacancies of scientists ofthe ARS institute the ICAR institutes andfor recruitment oflectures and assistant professors by the State Agricultural Universities (SAU).
 

ICMR

The ICMR formulates, coordinates and promotes biomedical research in India. Its network consists of 21 Permanent research institutes/centres (national institutes) located in different parts of India and six regional medical centers. The ICMR national institute offer oppurtunities for research in the area of medical biotechnology.
    Apart from the labs falling under CSIR/ICAR, almost all the IITs, institutes and universities having a life/biological sciences department further research in this frontier area of knowledge. Admission to these PhD programs is made on the basis of written test/interview conducted bythe department /centre concerned. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), a premier scientific research institute, conducts both PhD and integrated PhD programs (directly after BSc) in biological sciences, which includes biotechnology also. Admissions to IISc is through an entrance exam conducted by the institute or is based on the GATE score followed by an interview.
