Plants for a Magickal Garden

Planetary Correspondences of Sun
and its
Fire Aspect

Probably the most popular of the planetary influences for the general population, Sun rules over prosperity and general protection. Choose Sun plants when you are looking for centering, doing money magic, or honoring aspects of the divine that are sun-associated. Sun plants often have sun-shaped flowers (daisies, for instance) or when ingested give a feeling of calm warmth (unlike the heating of Mars, which can lead to violent action).

Tree Totems

The trees you pick for your own personal list of tree totems will of course reflect those that are native to your area.  Scrub oak and Redwood trees and Eucalyptus mark me very clearly as a resident of the Western part of the country.  One of the things that you'll learn as you walk the magical path is that you need to find your own way and it needs to reflect who and what YOU are.

Elm has always been the "shade" tree in my life.  But the lessons I've learned from Elm have been two fold.  One has been that I've never lived any where long enough to see a tree like an elm actually turn into a shade tree.   I've always benefited from someone else's long term planning.  The second is the fragility and impermanence of something even as large as a full grown elm

Celtic Trees

Trees purify the air;
they also purify the mind...
if you want to save your world,
you must save the trees.
-The Trees of Endor

I've included the dates of the "tree months" but based on my research the concept of tree months is completely modern.  Doesn't make it wrong just makes it modern.

The Song of Amergin and the Celtic Trees

birchtn.gif (4945 bytes)Birch - Beth the Lady of the Woods
The silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) is the most common tree birch in much of Europe. It grows up to 100 feet high, but is more often found in spreading clumps on sandy soils. It is one of the first trees to colonize an area after a mature forest is cut; this is probably a large part of its symbolic connection with new beginnings. It is cultivated in North America, often under the name of weeping birch.

Rowan - Luis (Sorbus aucuparia L.)
The red berries of the rowan, or mountain ash  were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning "to catch a bird". Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds.  Rowans flower in May. They grow to 50 feet and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae).
Attributes-Celtic
January 21 to February 7
The rowan tree holds a special place in Irish Folk beliefs. It was considered wise to plant a rowan beside the house to give protection. By tradition, red is the best color against evil. It was also believed that it kept the dead from rising, helped to speed the hound, prevented fire charming when hung in the house and generally protected the home, milk and dairy.

sorbus_ashtn.gif (3994 bytes)

Ash - Nion
the common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a major tree of lowland forests in much of Europe, along with oaks and beeches. It grows to 130 feet in open sites, with a broad crown reminiscent of American elm trees. Ash was and still is an important timber tree, and is a traditional material for the handle of a besom. The common ash is occasionally cultivated in North America, and similar native ash species are widely grown as street trees. Ashes are members of the Olive family (Oleaceae).

aldurtn.gif (2523 bytes)

Alder - Fearn
The common alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner) is common along lowland rivers, where it grows with aspens, poplars, and willows. Like willows, alders sprout from stumps. This allows them to regenerate after heavy flooding. In protect sites they may grow to 65 feet tall. Their leaves are more blunt-tipped than most North American alders, which look more like the gray alder (A. incana (L.) Moench). This species is more common in the mountains of Europe, and is not restricted to moist soils. Alder wood is said to resist rotting when it is wet, and was the wood of choice for pilings in many regions. Alders are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae). The pith is easily pushed out of green shoots to make whistles. Several shoots bound together by cordage, can be trimmed to the desired length for producing the note you want and used to entice Air elementals. The old superstition of "whistling up the wind" began with this custom.

Also known as May Tree and White Thorn. Wands made of this wood are of great power. The blossoms are highly erotic to men. Hawthorn can be used for protection, love and marriage spells. Like willows, hawthorns have many species in Europe, and they are not always easy to tell apart. All are thorny shrubs in the Rose family (Rosaceae), and most have whitish or pinkish flowers. The common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) and midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DC.) are both widespread. They are common in abandoned fields and along the edges of forests.

Oak --Duir
Oak has been considered sacred by just about every culture that has encountered the tree, but it was held in particular esteem by the Celts because of its size, longevity, and nutritious acorns. The oak was the "King of Trees" in a grove. Magic wands were made of its wood. Oak galls, known as Serpent Eggs, were used in magic charms. Acorns gathered at night held the greatest fertility powers. The Druids and Priestesses listened to the rustling oak leaves and the wrens in the trees for divinatory messages. Burning oak leaves purifies the atmosphere. It can be used in spells for protection, strength, success and stability; the different varieties will lend their own special 'flavor' to the magic.

hollytn.gif (11925 bytes)Holly -- Tinne
A beautiful white wood with an almost invisible grain; looks very much like ivory. Holly is associated with the death and rebirth symbolism of winter in both Pagan and Christian lore and is important to the Winter Solstice.  It was used in spear shafts also.

Graves (1966) and others are of the opinion that the original tinne was not the holly, but rather the holm oak, or holly oak (Quercus ilex L.). This is an evergreen oak of southern Europe that grows as a shrub, or as a tree to 80 feet. Like the holly, the holm oak has spiny-edged leaves on young growth. It does not have red berries, but it does have red leaf "galls" caused by the kermes scale insect; these are the source of natural scarlet dye.

Wands made of this wood symbolize white magic and healing. Forked sticks are used to find water or buried treasure. If outside and in need of magical protection quickly draw a circle around yourself with a hazel branch. To enlist the aid of plant fairies, string hazelnuts on a cord and hang up in your house or ritual room. Magically, hazel wood is used to gain knowledge, wisdom and poetic inspiration.

Also known as Ellhorn, Elderberry, Lady Elder. Sacred to the White Lady and Midsummer Solstice. The Druids used it to both bless and curse. Standing under an elder tree at Midsummer, like standing in a Fairy Ring of mushrooms, will help you see the "little people." Elder wands can be used to drive out evil spirits or thought forms. Music on panpipes or flutes of elder have the same power as the wand. Remember the words of the Rede. Elder is the Lady's Tree, burn it not or cursed ye be!
