One Gene: One Child
Hope Intervention Center Outreach Program
UPDATE
One Gene: One Child is an outreach program of The UPLB Genetics Society which is held regularly at the Hope Intervention Center in Calamba City - the first special education center in CaLaBaRZon. The program was started in 2007.
The Hope Intervention Center
The Hope Intervention Center in Calamba City is a school for children diagnosed with autism and related developmental disabilities. Autism is a nuero-developmental disability that affects a child’s ability to communicate and interact socially. With support from the City Social Services Office of Calamba, special-education teachers and Autism Society of the Philippines professionals, the school was established in 1998 as the San Jose Day Care Center by parents who wanted special education (SPEd) for their children. From having eight students, one SPEd consultant and SPEd teacher, the Hope Intervention Center serves more than 30 students from surrounding towns in Laguna and Batangas with an increased number of SPEd teachers, assistant teachers and occupational therapists. The Center is the Centennial Community Project of the Rotary Club of Calamba. The school is headed by Ms. Minerva Obrince.

Objectives of the Program
The program is managed by the Hope Intervention Committee and was initiated by Ms. Mary Rachel Raventar who was later selected as the first head of the ad hoc committee (A.Y. 2007-2008).
On March 11, the Philippine Daily Inquirer published the essay submitted by Mary Rachel Reventar, a resident member of The UPLB Genetics Society. Reventar wrote about the Hope Intervention where she spearheaded an outreach program for the organization called “One Gene: One Child”.
The UPLB Genetics Society would like to thank Mr. Paulino Daniel Cepeda (Charter) and his family for their kind donation of books and toys. Two boxes of books and toys were shipped from California, USA. Children's books and toys will benefit the Hope Intervention Center, and the Indigenous Community Outreach of the DNA Analysis Laboratory (NSRI-UP Diliman) in Mindoro through Honorary Member Dr. Ma. Corazon de Ungria. Some books will also be given to the IBS Reading Room.

Hope Intervention Center Public Library
The Hope Intervention Center Public Library is situated beside the Hope Intervention Center. The building was financed by the Calamba Doctors Hospital. The creation of the library aims to provide a venue for information assistance about special children not only to the parents and teachers of the Center but also to the general public. The library houses children's books, encycopledias and a collection of books about autism and other neuro-behavioral disorders like Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and the like. Booking Hope
After Genesoc's first activity, the organization has extended its mission with the creation of the One Gene: One Child - Booking Hope Program. It was created to promote awareness about Hope Intervention to other agencies and institutions; and to encourage these agencies and institutions to give donations to support the school and the Hope Intervention Center Public Library.
Please drop off donations at Wing C IBS Lobby or at the Agronomy Lobby
