Genetics Camp 2007
In 2007, the organization again hosted the Genetics Camp with the theme “Genetics in Human Nutrition: Of Rice and Men” last January 20 – 21, 2007 at the International Rice Research Institute and Local Government Academy Training Center, UPLB, College, Los Baňos, Laguna. This was a two-day event, filled with activities that involved high school students of the Laguna province as a way of reaching out with and empowering the science of Genetics. This served as an avenue for students to learn more about the science of Genetics – its background, applications and implications in the society.
The camp specifically included a tour in IRRI, wherein the latest techniques and equipment were showcased. To apply the knowledge acquired from the lectures and to visualize the abstract representation of the molecules involved in the genetic processes, workshops with DNA kits were held. Here, an interactive way of learning was achieved with the members of the organization serving as the facilitators. To test the participants of their comprehension of the topics discussed during the event and to expose them to a competitive environment, the organization conducted the Inter-High School Genetics Quiz Contest and Extemporaneous Speech Competition. Lastly, since the organization believes that academics alone cannot shape an individual’s total personality and recognizes the necessity of fun and interaction during learning, It then included the Socials Night among its activities. Here, the participants, along with the members found time to mingle with one another and to showcase their talents, a good breakaway from the technicalities of science.
