Genetics Camp 2006

The first Genetics Camp was held last January 14-15, 2006 with the theme "Genetics: An Introduction and Its Applications". The camp was launched carrying the tag line “Genetics at Your Fingertips” at Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Calamba, Laguna. A total of 17 participants including teachers and students from various schools attended the camp. The said camp proved to be an efficient approach in broadening the audience for the science of Genetics with its overwhelming and receptive feedbacks from both the participants and guest speakers.

The activities of the first camp were the Genetics Quiz Contest, Poster-Making Contest, activities related to Genetics for high school students and film-showing for the teachers.

Invited Speakers and Lecturers:

  • Dr. Raquel Fortun, the First Filipina Forensic Pathologist College of Medicine, University of the Philippines Manila
  • Dr. Rhodora Aldemita, the Chief Science Research Specialist of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) and
  • Dr. Carmencita Padilla, the Director of the Institute of Human Genetics, National Institutes of Health (NIH), UP Manila
