War On Mafia
Is it Bringing Us Anywhere?
This Tuesday seven more bodies were buried outside of the city on the road to Goldshire. Every week now the citizens mourn the persons that die in a combined SCPD (Stormwind City Police Department) - RIA (Royal Intelligence Agency) effort known as the War on Mafia. This week's souls were victims to the Sunday incident in which 3 members of the Scholars' Society were taken hostage by the local gangsters in the infamous Pig & Whistle Tavern which has long been the unofficial headquarters of Stormwind Criminal Underworld.
The SCPD released an official statement apologizing for all the trouble this program has caused the citizens and encouraging volunteers to join in as to eliminate the "Mafia" faster.
"The thieves and murderers are the only ones to blame for the problems of our kingdom. With them gone we shall once again become a quiet, peaceful place."
But is it really so? A resident of Old Town, Mr. Bartleby, commented on the situation:
"Oh, the thieves... hic! Yeah, they don't hurt nobody. It was all nice and quiet here but then those big guards came and those hooded people and they all have problems with the criminals. Now all thieves get angry and they purposely kill more people b'cause the government won't leave them alone.... hic! MORE BEER OVER HERE!"
The "big guards" and "hooded people" Mr. Bartleby referred to are none else but the SCPD and RIA officials who now patrol the city's dangerous places at night. After their patrols, citizens oftentimes find dead thieves' bodies lying somewhere on the streets. But are the victims truly thieves or do innocent people suffer as well?
"My workday had just ended and I stepped out of the tavern when they attacked me!" claims Connor Rivers, a worker of Pig and Whistle (and definately not a criminal). "I was lucky to have my butcher knife with me so I hit the two of them a few times and ran away before they got me!"
Is it legal to simply murder thieves without a fair trial? We decided to ask a professor of law and theology, Bishop DeLavey.
"The law of Stormwind clearly states that an enforcement official is allowed to kill a criminal if the second is caught on doing something that brings an immediate danger to others. Otherwise a trial must be held within two weeks after the arrest."
All that is good and well but are there any evidence to say the dead thieves were in fact hurting someone? And are there evidence to say they were not? We decided to go straight to the top and contact the Earl of Stormwind and the creator of the War on Mafia program - Duke Leomir Barov.
"In the last 4 months, we've held over 27 trials over criminals caught doing illegal activities. Four resulted in executions, 17 in prison sentences, and the rest were found not guilty. We've also faced the problem of SCPD and RIA members using cruel force against persons with no evidence of them doing anything dangerous. Those officials were stripped of rank and some even put behind the bars. We do everything in our power to not allow government agents cross the line while at work" was the Earl's response to our inquiries.
His Highness refused to answer a question about the number of casualties so far resulting from the War on Mafia stating that it is confidential information.
War on Mafia - heroic battle or terrible mistake - the time will show. Though one thing is for sure: the streets are no longer safe.
