Why this?

At the beginning of 2013, I embarked on a 'creative journey' and came across some scribbled words in one of my notebooks. It now seems appropriate to use the quotation here:
Seek to understand the tradition and the techniques
will regenerate within your imagination

And that's exactly what I'm hoping to do as an artist ...
I've worked with stitches for many years & they've always been a fascination. Why? I don't know ... I think it may have something to do with how & why they're used.

For this reason, I've decided to investigate (initially) & reference 5 main stitches:
STRAIGHT - CROSS - HERRINGBONE - BUTTONHOLE - CHAIN
... each one extensively used across a variety of textile crafts. All have practical uses and sometimes worked quite differently ... yet ... only certain ones (depending on the craft), can be used decoratively. Why? That's what I hope to find out ...

PLEASE NOTE: Any thought-provoking ideas, conclusions, assumptions etc are entirely my own while I try to demonstrate how STITCHES come to be used &/or adapted!

By the way, the cushion in the background is detailed under 'STRAIGHT STITCH' as: BLACK SATIN CUSHION
