Friends , family and friendships , drafted August 8, 2013 Meteor shower tonight !
i haven't done a blog for a while . Mind you , i am not traveling , i am simply here by myself in Pahoa on a beautiful August evening , me and the chicken and the duck
Andrew just left for Ma'ui where he'll be living with his sister and going to high school @ Seabury Hall
Larry is around but is living at Henry Klein's house while Henry ( aged 92 ) is in the hospital .
We all hope and pray Henry will get better soon . i saw him the other day and he is in good spirits although looking every bit his 92 years of age , unfortunately . He fell last June 28th and broke his wrist ( compound fracture ) then , whilst in the hospital , incurred an infection where they had to take off some of his toenails . He is walking with a cane and ( when he does get out ) will come here to our house to live . The house is large with no stairs . His place has 25 stairs and is off the grid . We're best of friends . People ask me how he is doing all the time
It's beautiful tonight . Clear , crisp , and cool ( by Hawai'i standards ) night . Stars everywhere . No moon . Shooting stars to the south
Global climate change translates in to a more northerly trade wind with less rain here , thank goodness because Hilo is the rainiest city in the USA according to http://www.weather.com and Jim Cantore , who was just here the other day . It's not a gloomy dark and cold rain but the tropical type , like Rangoon or Bangkok , non and 6 pm every day . Somerset Maugham penned his short story " Rain ," in Hilo on his way to Samoa 100 years ago . The story is about a missionary who falls for a local gal
i am reading " Motherless Daughter, " a hardback by Hope Edelman and will forward it to Becky when done . It's not a novel but it's a bit gloomy . I skip that stuff . Chapter six is " The Father-Daughter Dyad ." The prologue to the book reads , " It is the image in the moon that links us to our lost treasures ; but it is the loss that shapes the image , gathers the flowers, weaves the garland " That pretty much describes Becky . Even the girl on the cover looks like her ! Becky's been a cover girl before
Andrew left for Pa'ia - Hei'ku - OGG with much fanfare . We had a ' despedida ' with many other friends of his and Melissa , who left for the mainland to live with relatives in WV . His old gang has pretty much broken up now , although they will perhaps see each other ( Andrew , Mo , Aaron , Melissa , Jesse , Juni , Makana , Ritchie , Caleb and Jacob and his other new \ old friends ) at holidays . I'll keep up with the kids back here . People were surprised to hear that Andrew left . We are hoping that Andrew's relationship with his sister will be similar to the one she had with my mom in NE - US when she went to a private high school there . That worked out well . Becky isn't Andrew's mom or grandmom and they should enjoy a respectful relationship together . i can't see why not . They get along fine together , much better than my boys ever got along with each other . Of all my kids Becky is a lot like me even though she is the girl and 30 years old now . We are the only two people who ever really got along well with my mom . Mary used to fight with everyone everywhere almost every time , and unfortunately had no close friends she could trust , except for my cousin Janice in MA during her final hours . My Dad Larry ( age 85 ) and i have always gotten along together fine . There is not now nor never was any animosity between us . I just visited with him last March in Florida
Becky has common sense and isn't always trying to ' best ' me , like my Rob and Drew , who are also sharp as tacks . Larry jr., just wants to live in and around home and the house . Home is the place where , when you have to go there , they have to take you in . We all get along very well apart and together , the kids and i . Betsy used to fight with them much more than me . i can count the number of times i have confronted them on one thing or another on one hand . It was usually for their lashing out unnecessarily against me or her . Andrew's living with Becky will give her a taste of what it is like to have a strong willed teenager around . He's a lot like Rob . Rob and Becky are closest as siblings . Becky has lived with other guys before , too , and this arrangement will be easy . i have trained Andrew well and had ample practice with the first three and they seemed to have worked out okay
Blood runs thicker than beer
In essence , i feel i have completed my major daily parental duties ( except for the $$ part ) and no longer need to be a mom and dad to them 24 x 7 x 365 at 58 . It is a distinct relief and i am glad to have completed this phase successfully
As you are judged by the company you keep you are also judged by your kids
i am sure there will still be minor crises but i do not wake up in the morning thinking , " What am i going to cook today ? What needs to be cleaned , fixed or mended ? who needs to go where and when ? " Let the retirement begin . It's been ten years now since i retired . My first thought yesterday , after lunch , was , " Gee , i'd like to become a ski bum again ." Funny , huh ? Don't ask me why . i haven't thought about skiing since i gave it up when i went in to the Peace Corps in '78 and then pursued a full 30 year career in the tropics . i have been thinking a lot about going back to Micronesia lately for an extended visit , also , now that i'm old and in the way
I'd kill myself skiing , though , like CA Rep. Sonny Bono did . My pal Al Maxwell ( rip - melanoma ) had his heart attack on the slopes on a Thanksgiving weekend several years ago and then drove himself to the hospital and even lived to tell about it . Several other friends have suffered heart attacks - some doctors - too . Heart attacks are definite indicators of our mortality and our age and eating and exercise . The middle ages . i have been spared so far
If it were me clutching my chest I'd call an ambulance because i hate driving , healthy or not
Betsy never drove . We always shopped for food and things together -- even overseas -- but there i could always call the embassy for rides to/from work , if i wanted to be picked up in a bullet proof Suburban ® with guards with machine-guns sitting in the front seat . i have no desire to go backwards in time or buy a fast convertible and drive it stupidly . It's too late for all that and i've been there , done that , and can even remember most of it
i can handle it . Even Mo ( age 14 like Andrew & friends since she arrived here from Thailand in the 2nd grade ) asked me recently if i had ever been alone . Well , some time before Peace Corps happened was the last time i was truly alone and by myself , vacations not with standing . In any case , i have my kids and many friends right around here . My next door neighbor is trying to be friendly with me these days . Claire's husband committed suicide right before we moved in ten years ago and she has not remarried . It's probably why Tom and Jane Smith sold us this , their unfinished place at that time
Not a cloud in the sky
i think i'll break out the planetarium program ' Stellarium ' on my Apple ® laptop tonight for fun
i want to locate the Andromeda galaxy , the only other galaxy one can see with the naked eye besides our own Milky Way . Every star you see is in the Milky Way
It's 7 pm and light out , yet not for long " The long , twilight struggle ." ( quoting Theodore Sorenson - JFK's speechwriter writer ) has just begun
Meteor shower tonight !
It's best seen at 03:00 am when the Earth is faced in the direction it is going
