Mary Ann Langworthy 1822 - 1853

Mary Ann, the third child of Henry & Mary Ann Langworthy, was born at Brixham and baptised at Kingswear on 29 Jan 1822.

Her brother Charles, two years older, died when she was 8, so she was the oldest child at home after her eldest brother Henry went to sea. She had 3 younger siblings.

In 1841 Census, she was at Higher Street, Kingswear, aged 19, with her mother and younger siblings  Benjamin T 14 and Elizabeth Ann 7.  (Sister Jane 11 was not there).

On 14 Jan 1845, she was married at Kingswear Parish Church:
Charles Bryan Napman, full age, Bachelor, Mariner, Kingswear, father John Napman, shipwright.
Mary Ann Langworthy, full age, Spinster, - , Kingswear, father William Henry Langworthy, Mariner.

Their son, Charles Henry Knapman was born 16 Oct 1845 and baptised at Kingswear on 7 Dec 1845.

Mary Ann was soon a widow, though we have not found registration of her husband’s death – probably drowned at sea like her father. In Q4 1849, Mary Ann was married again, to William Gillard, blacksmith. Their son William Henry Langworthy Gillard was born on 3 Oct 1850 and baptised at Kingswear on 15 Dec 1850.

The last family gathering at Kingswear was for sister Jane’s wedding on 3 Nov 1852. Mary Ann’s husband William Gillard and her sister Ann Elizabeth were the witnesses to the marriage.

Mary Ann died on 16 Jan 1853, age 32, presumably away from home as her death was registered in Registration District of Chard (Kingswear was in Totnes RD). She was buried in Kingswear Churchyard on 19 Jan 1853, her mother in the same grave on 4 Feb 1853, and the headstone commemorates her father drowned at Padstow, her mother and herself.

Her second husband William Gillard was buried at Kingswear on 12 Jan 1882 aged 59.
