Cyril Frederick Steel 1908 - 1938

Cyril Frederick Steel (my father) was the only son of Frederick George William Steel and Annie Jelliffe. He was born on 22 Nov 1908 in Portsmouth and had one sister, Nora Annie, who was born on 8 Jul 1917 at 81 George Street. No baptism has been found for Cyril.

By 1924 the family were living at 73 Meyrick Road. When Cyril was 18 his father died.

Cyril worked in HM Dockyard as an Electrician. He was very keen on motor cycles and was quite a musician, playing the piano and singing with a local Dance Band.

Cyril married Phyllis May Langworthy on 10 Dec 1932 at Portsmouth Register Office. They then lived with Cyril's parents at 73 Meyrick Road, Portsmouth, where their only son was born on 11 March 1935. They then moved to 16 Malvern Road, Gosport in 1937.

Cyril developed tuberculosis and was in a sanatorium for many months before his death on 13 Oct 1938, just a few weeks before his 30th birthday leaving Phyllis a widow with a 3 year old child.

He was buried at Alverstoke (Ann’s Hill) Cemetery, Gosport on 15 Oct 1938 (Plot 187).
