Clement William Jelliffe 1854 - 1890

Clement William Jelliffe was born 20 Aug 1854 and lived at Sidlesham Mill, beside Pagham Harbour. He was baptised at Sidlesham on 8 Sep 1854, son of James & Ellen Jelliff. His father was a mariner. Clement had an older brother Joseph Randolph born 2 Jul 1852, and soon a younger sister Elizabeth Jane born 1856 & brother Edwin James born 1858. They were all baptised at Sidlesham.

The family were living in Portsea by 1861, where the 1861 Census shows Ellen Jelleff, Seaman's wife and 4 children at 26 Regent Street, where they were one of two households. The birth of Henry Allen Jelliffe was registered in Q2 1862, and Thomas Ernest Jelliff in Q4 1865.

In 1871 census, the family were all at home at 60 South Brighton Street, Portsea,

The Royal Navy records show:- Continuous Service No CS 11507 B. starting 31 Mar 1870 as B2Class for 10yrs Signed up on HMS St Vincent. Joined RN as Boy 20 Aug 1872. Certificate of Consent signed by Ellen Jelliffe at Landport. 23-Feb 1870. Height 5'1". Complexion Fair. Hair Lt Brown. Eyes Grey. Marks nil.

He appears in the records of Victory Lodge, Ancient Independent Order of Oddfellows – Kent Unity:

On 26th April 1881, Clement married Annie Bevis at St Mary's Portsea:

(Annie Bevis was born 25th May 1849 at Newport, Isle of Wight, the 6th of 10 children of Benjamin & Priscilla Bevis, Her father Benjamin Bevis (1803-1885 ) married Priscilla Barton (1817-1892) at Whippingham Parish Church on 7 June 1842, living first at Whippingham, then Newport, then Oystershell Cottages, Carisbrook for the rest of their lives. In 1871 Census Annie was at West Cowes,General Servant. !n 1881 Census at Lynwood House, Waverley Road, Portsea, Cook/ Domestic Servant.)

Clement & Annie had 4 children.

Joseph Willie was born 3 Feb 1882, baptised 5 Mar 1882 at Parish Church Portsea (St Mary's)

Annie born 24 Jun 1883, bap 18 May 1890 St Michael & All Angels
William Allen born Q3 1886, buried 8 Oct 1886

Clement Allen born May 1888, baptised 18 May 1890 St Michael & All Angels

The 1889/90 Electoral Register for Ward 10 (St Paul) has Clement William Jeliffe at 44 Grosvenor Street, nature of qualification Dwelling house.

In May 1890, his occupation was given as Foreman at Dockyard.

Clement William died on 26 May 1890. and was buried on 31 May in Kingston Cemetery.  (Wests, 1st Row, 24th grave, 6ft).
