History 2014

2014

The Siege 2014 saw the team build on the huge successes of 2013. Having won IFDA Tournament of the Year 2013, the TD’s knew they would have to keep upping their game to ensure the tournament stayed as no.1 in the Irish calendar. The 2014 edition had a record high 32 teams competing, including an exciting 7 foreign teams. It was also the first year teams had to be turned away due to oversubscription.

2014 saw a host of sponsors support the tournament, including Five Ultimate, Get Horizontal, Skyd Magazine, Ulticards and Friction Gloves. GH and Skyd provided much publicity and updates of the tournament. Five Ultimate designed sweet custom gear which sold like hot cakes and the custom Siege friction gloves didn’t stay on the shelves too long either!

The Open division featured Gentle, the Belgian boys who are now Siege regulars, Uncle John’s Band, a wacky combination of German and Polish players with tie-dye tshirts, and UTKA, a college team from Utrecht. Along with this we had all the countries top clubs and colleges as well as two Ireland Junior Open teams, all competing for their place on the final squad. An entertaining final between Ireland’s top 2 clubs, Rebel and Ranelagh, saw Ranelagh take an early 8-2 lead before the Rebel lads got their heads in check and made a stunning comeback to take the game 14-12, regaining the title they last won in 2012. Snatch took the Plate prize home while Gentle retained their Spirit title, showing exactly how to play competitive and honest ultimate.

The Women’s division was one of the biggest highlights of 2014. 10 teams, including 4 foreign teams, provided the biggest and most competitive women’s division Irish ultimate has ever seen. Along with our regular club and college teams, we were graced with the presence of YAKA from France, Gentle and LUV from Belgium, and Squaws, the Sussex based UK college champions. It was great to have such numbers and competition. The final came down to 2013 finalist Rebel and Siege newcomers YAKA. YAKA were using the tournament as preparation from WUCC 2014 and proved too strong in the end for Rebel, although they put up a fine showing. Jabba took the plate prize while the ever enthusiastic and smiling Squaws took home Spirit.

Another great year for the Siege crew saw everyone go home with many fond memories of the weekend and looking forward to the 2015 edition. The Saturday night party in Dolan’s was a huge hit and saw some great Monty Python themed costumes, including Lukas Giedraitis’ winning Black Knight. The Siege of Limerick has shown itself to be an unmissable weekend!
