About

Welcome to the website of The Siege of Limerick - Ireland’s biggest outdoor Open and Women’s tournament.

In 2006 the UL Ninjas Ultimate Frisbee Club was founded by “Limerick” Jim Heneghan. They began as a largely ineligible intervarsity team, attending any Irish tournament that popped up. Being both ambitious and naive, the Ninjas (well, specifically Jim), saw a spot in the ultimate calendar for a tournament. Pitches were booked, teams were invited and, hey presto, The Siege of Limerick was born! Since its inception in 2007, The Siege has aimed to provide a quality blend of competitive ultimate, raging parties, prizes, gifts, new friends, old friends and memorable moments, all mashed into one crazy weekend in Limerick not to be missed.

In late 2012, a new team of TD’s took to the helm of The Siege. Feeling the tournament had stagnated, they went back to basics and started from the ground up. Providing teams with great facilities, regular communication and information, competitive games, value for money and crazy parties were the key focus for the new organisers. They also strived to bring more foreign teams to Ireland, both to strengthen the competition and create new links and friendships to the Irish Ultimate community.

Although young and inexperienced in the art of running tournaments, their ambition, boldness and perseverance led them to organising one of the best tournaments Ireland had ever seen, the 2013 edition of The Siege of Limerick. The tournament was awarded Tournament of the Year at the IFDA Ball in November 2013 and was amazing recognition from our peers.

Since then The Siege has been growing, going above and beyond all expectation. Always striving to improve and never standing still, the past few editions continued to wow attendees each year. The core of the young TD team is still present with new, equally ambitious TD’s being blooded every year, continually striving to please our captivated audience.

Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee is a relatively young and new sport in Ireland, started in Dublin in 1995 by a man named Simon Cocking - check out his blog where you will find many great interviews from some of the first members of Irish Ultimate. Back then it was 10-12 guys and girls throwing around and playing some pickup in Herbert Park. It has since grown to become a popular, yet still developing, sport in most major cities and colleges in Ireland.

Our player base is evergrowing and the work done in schools by many in Dublin, Cork and more recently Limerick, has helped spread knowledge of ultimate among the younger generation. We are represented by the Irish Flying Disc Association (IFDA), who do countless voluntary hours to help promote and develop ultimate in Ireland.

As for ultimate as a sport itself:

“Ultimate is a fast-moving team sport enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of players the world over. Although frequently compared to sports like soccer or American Football, Ultimate has some unique features that set it apart. There are no referees. And it’s played with a flying disc.

To compete at the highest level, Ultimate players require speed, agility and endurance. Yet beginners find the game easy to learn and fun to play. Grab a disc, get out there, and discover why many think this is the ultimate team sport.”
