Ch 8. How do Movies Move Us?

Overview

This chapter concerns the general paradox of fiction—the difficulty reconciling the apparent belief-dependence of emotions with our hearty emotional responses to fiction. I motivate the problem, establish the paradox, and then explore the major competing solutions, from Walton's pretend theory to Carroll's thought theory.  The chapter provides a brief overview of the major competing theories of the emotions.
