This chapter identifies the subject, provides a brief history of the area, and introduces the topics that are explored in the remainder of the book. It draws two important distinctions. First, it distinguishes between two types of "film theory," what would be more aptly called film interpretation and the philosophy of film. Second, it distinguishes between philosophy in film (or philosophy through film) and the philosophy of film, the subject of this book. Then I offer a brief account of the history of the philosophy of film, moving from classical film theory, to "screen theory," to contemporary analytic philosophy of film. Finally, the chapter briefly introduces the variety of topics to follow.
