Medusa's Ancient Magic...
Reflection of the tondo of an Attic red-figure kylix cup showing Medusa, a beautiful woman who was turned into a monster because she did not return a God's love. Such cups were used for ancient Greek drinking games such as kottabos. Revelers of the past flung wine dregs at a target from these cups, while murmuring the name of their beloved. Medusa's face was often seen on Athena's shield as an apotropaic image to strike fear into the hearts of warriors. Here a modern Oxford archaeologist is captured by Medusa's image.
