07. Critical Literacies 2010 - Learning the Skills to MOOC

Critical Literacies 2010 was offered by Stephen Downes and Rita Kop at the National Research Council. The course was a smaller and less well known course, attracting about 300 participants. It blended elements of 'critical thinking' and '21st century literacies'.

The intent of the course was to determine whether it would be possible to use a MOOC in order to teach the skills needed to be successful in a MOOC. But what were these skills? We determined that they would be described by critical literacies, as described by six major elements of language and cognition: syntax, semantics, pragmatics, cognition context and change.
