CenturyLink sent out a notice June 10th that it was switching it’s free Antivirus protection from Norton to McAfee. To install go to https://www.centurylink.com and sign in to your CenturyLink account. You should then see a link on your home page to “Download McAfee Security”. I successfully downloaded and installed McAfee without any problems in about 10 minutes. You are limited to installing it on 2 devices; I do not recall if Norton had a limit. I only have a laptop and desktop that had Norton, so the limit of 2 free is not a problem.
After the McAfee install, I checked and my PC still had Norton installed. I opened up “Windows Settings” then “Apps” where I then selected “Norton AntiVirus Online” and did an “Uninstall” on it and the “Norton Safe Web”. You will be instructed to reboot your PC after the uninstall. Make sure to uninstall Norton so you do not have multiple Antivirus on your PC. I did the “Uninstall” of Norton before doing the McAfee install on my second PC. Uninstalling before or after seems to work either way. In the rare chance you have trouble with the Norton uninstall you may need to go to the Symantec website and download the Norton Removal tool.
After the McAfee install you can see what McAfee has to offer. You can change when it does it’s Scheduled Scan. I scheduled mine to “Every second Monday at 4:00 AM”. My desktop PC is left on all the time, so anytime at night will not interfere with my using the PC. For a laptop, schedule for a time and date when you plan to leave it on for updates. If your laptop is off for several weeks and you turn it on when you want to use it, it will be very slow doing updates and scans when you turn it on to use. McAfee has a feature “Update my apps” to scan and update a number of apps/software to insure your device has the latest versions. I recommend you keep everything updated to be safe. It also has “McAfee Web Boost” to stop auto-playing videos and speed up your web browsing. I have not tried this feature. You then can add or turn on extensions from McAfee on the browsers you use to add more protection while searching and downloading.
