The  following was written when I discovered a definition that described my own metaphysical determinations as "metaphysical naturalism". I have since discovered there is much disagreement about definitions of any sort of naturalism, within the naturalist community itself.
 
It is my goal to direct public definitions toward the acceptance of "metaphysical naturalism" as a repudiation of determinism and of pluralistic or dualistic materialism. However, some of what I wrote below must be revised to include the new information I have come across. Each revision will be kept so the reader may compare them.  Metaphysical naturalism is a repudiation of the scientific naturalism that advocates "determinism," specifically denies the existence of free will, and denies the existence of the organically-originated but never-the-less metaphysical human soul.
    "It is often simply referred to as naturalism, and occasionally as philosophical naturalism or ontological naturalism, though all those terms have other meanings as well," says Wikipedia, and scientific naturalism is also often called, simply, naturalism.
    For this reason, the Metaphysical Naturalist will use the initials MN and SN as often as is possible, rather than the noun and adjectives in their entirety.
    As a metaphysical naturalist, I seek a rational metaphysics in every aspect of life. Free will is not contra-causal but causative and none-the-less within natural existence, is the power to think or not to think, to act or not to act, and to recognize--or not--existence as the cause of your freedom of will. This is one of the repudiations. SN recognizes existence as the cause of Homo sapiens' lack of free will.
    The soul, also, exists, not as a supernatural connection to the universe, existence, or a god, and not as anything other than the emotional sum total of the human's life experiences, created from the whole cloth of his experiences beginning with the tabula rasa mind at birth, and perishes when the body perishes. The soul is the identity of the conscience one's mind cannot evade without ultimately making the human intellectually, emotionally, and epistemologically impotent.
    SN does not recognize the human soul by that name, describing it instead in the terms of the science of neurology. To SN, the "soul" is nothing more than the events of the biology of the brain as sensed by our emotions, which we then identify as the "soul."
    SN does not deny that we sense these neurological events, nor that we call them by the name of "soul." But to SN, "soul" is denotational of the traditional view that this soul is supernatural and connected to the creator of the universe, to whom that soul will return (if that is to be the course of events set by that creator) upon the death of the body; but the traditional view that the soul survives the body is what SN is fighting.
    That part of the fight is not wrong. One of the tenets of naturalism is that the soul is not supernatural and therefor does not survive the death of the body.
    The part of the fight that makes SN wrong is in the denial that that which is called the soul has any metaphysical value.
    It has a great deal of value in MN. That value is just one of the things this web site is dedicated to explaining and preserving.
