This piece began with cynicism towards the sticky sweet symbol that the heart as a valentine shape has become. It ended up as a playful multiple vessel form with a small gold heart at it's center. I've realized that I actually like pink Necco wafers, and also valentines." ![]() Charlet Davenport, Nest of Sugar Sweet Hearts, inside view, ceramic with opaque glaze and lustre gold "The containers may be nested together and looked inside by viewers if they wish." His work included hand blown glass bowls that were copied after woven reed baskets, sculptures assembled from many parts, a glass ceiling that was layered on top with many glass shapes and colors, and chandeliers. I wanted to use a digital display instead of printing out the photos, so that the colors would shine through better, like the original glass displays." Christine Hauck, Wildflower Medley, 8" x 16", Oil on canvas, $450 -The center square is a 4-H clover. 4-H was an important part of Roxie's professional career. She served as a 4-H coordinator in both Vermont and New Hampshire. -Top right is a skier, done in dark green fabric with gold hearts. Roxie was a member of the UVM women's ski team. UVM's colors are green and gold. The gold hearts are to commemorate Roxie's birthday, which came the day after Valentine's day. -Center right is an outline of New Hampshire. Roxie worked in the UNH Extension offices of both Grafton and Coos County. She hiked, skied, and kayaked in the mountains and lakes of northern New Hampshire. -Bottom right shows a John Deere tractor on a pink background, surrounded by a circle of green tractors. This represents the notion that "Girls can farm". At one point in her working life Roxie had a small herd of Jersey cows. -Bottom center has a small map of South America, with a gold star next to the country of Ecuador. Roxie spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador, a venture for which she had to learn Spanish. The letters for Peace Corps are in blue, with stars and comets, which indicates "reaching for the stars". -Bottom left is a brown Jersey cow, cows always held a special place in Roxie's heart. (Although this homemade cow may look more like a cross between a moose and an aardvark,) -Middle left is an outline of Vermont. Roxie was a true Orange County girl, born in Randolph where her parents were working at "The Aggie School"- now Vermont Technical College, raised in Fairlee, and graduated from Bradford Academy. Roxie earned a BS in Agriculture and later her Master's degree from the University of -Vermont in Burlington, and worked as a 4-H agent in Orleans County. -Upper left is a mug of coffee in the UVM colors of green and gold. Roxie loved her coffee! And she drank it black! -The final square shows butterflies flying up to the sky. For twenty five years, Roxie's body was imprisoned by the effects of Multiple Sclerosis. Now she has metamorphosed into a new form, like butterflies do, and she is free to fly." Abraham Oort and Robert Raphael (Professional painter, Princeton, NJ), Symphony in Green, Yellow, Blue, Acrylic house paint on canvas, 60"x 62", 2013, NFS. "This abstract painting was made on a cloudy, windy day on the porch of Raphael's home. During the student-teacher process using a 6 inch wide brush, little sticks and leaves fell off the surrounding trees and landed on our painting, at times insects also became stuck. We could not remove them all and decided to keep them as part of the creative process. Many layers of paint and different techniques of distributing the paint were used. It helped to create a pattern resembling how Vermont could look viewed from space, with it's trees, rivers, lakes, roads, and human settlements illuminated by the sun or moon." Abraham Oort, Symphony in Orange, Red and Violet, Acrylic house paint on canvas, 62" x 60", 2013, NFS. "This abstract painting was prepared in my studio in Hartland in a somewhat similar way as the Symphony in Green, Yellow and Blue. However the emotional character is quite different because of the choice of stronger, more explosive, fiery colors. The resulting pattern can sometimes be seen in the fall leaves of Vermont." Abraham Oort and Robert Raphael (Painter, Princeton, NJ), Abstract Painting of Sea-Land-Skyscape, Acrylic paint on paper, 24" x 18", 2011, NFS. "This painting was made in the studio of Raphael in Princeton, NJ. It shows the scene of an idyllic visit to the Atlantic Ocean along the coast of New Jersey on a perfect sunny day. Sunlight shines on the clouds and ocean with red flowers bordering the coast."
