Being Jewish is about standing up for what we believe is right, regardless of popular opinion and practice. We are a nation of Ivriim. We stand alone and, if we connect to who we really are, we have the power to transcend what appear to be the immutable rules of nature. History best illustrates this idea. What other nation has suffered so much for its belief system and has nonetheless clung tenaciously to it and not only survived but thrived? Empires have risen and fallen, and the laws of nature would have had the same happen to us, but we're still here.Being Jewish can at times be lonely, but the generations that preceded us knew it was worth it. This knowledge held up even if it meant being an Ivri, standing alone on one side with the world taunting us from the other. Being Jewish is about standing up for what we believe is right, regardless of popular opinion and practice. We are promised that ultimately the nations of the world will look to us for moral guidance just like they revered our forefather Abraham's counsel. Until then, we need the strength to live up to our name -- even if means being an Ivri when we find ourselves on the other side of public opinion.
"All it takes . . ." is a reference to the often quoted and more often ignored piece of folk wisdom "All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing".
Obama on Tehran's Democrats:
"We do not interfere in Iran's internal affairs"
Tens of thousands of protesters yesterday braved police batons and tear gas canisters in the streets of Iranian cities to denounce their theocratic rulers and call for a change of regime. In spite of repression by the Basiji thugs and the West's short attention span, the Green Revolution lives on.
On this, the 30th anniversary of the hostage taking at the U.S. Embassy, their message was to a large degree intended for America and President Obama. The opposition hijacked the day, usually an occasion to denounce the Great Satan, to declare their desire to break with that past and build a free Iran. They marched alongside state-sanctioned rallies, before their protests were broken up violently.

President Ahmadinejad speaks. He's launched "The World Without Zionism" campaign. So maybe you were wondering why a country with as much oil and natural gas as Iran so desperately needs nukes?
The "civilized" world is racist. It has a double standard. It doesn't expect much from Muslim states. Not when it comes to humanitarian aid and not when it comes to civilized behavior.
Iran's "The World Without Zionism" campaign has provoked some Euro-criticism but that too, I expect, will quickly pass.
I couldn't resist doing this light-weight but funny cartoon when I realized that they'd already wiped us off their maps.
We are called Hebrews, Ivriim, because we inherited that legacy
of Abraham. We are a lonely people, persecuted throughout most of history.
Generation after generation tried to convince us we are wrong. Sometimes those
efforts appeared polite and more often they were accompanied by the sword. To be
a Jew historically meant trouble. It meant exclusion from guilds, second class
citizenship at best, and being the scapegoat for society's problems. Yet we
remained and remain to this day apart and unique in our faith and customs. We
maintain our national language and distinct identity, and despite our small
numbers, have persevered in a way that no other people have or could have. This
is so despite centuries of temptation to abandon our heritage. Jews are
different, and are proud of it.
For this broad coalition of democrats, America is a beacon of hope and the Iran of the street arguably the most pro-American place in the world. Earlier this year, before the huge demonstrations in the wake of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's brazen theft of the June presidential election, one popular opposition chant was, "O ba ma!"—in Farsi a play on the new American President's last name that translates as, "He with us!"
But the opposition's dreams of American support, moral as much as anything, have been dashed. Mr. Obama was slow and reluctant to speak out on their behalf and eager to engage the Iranian regime in nuclear talks as soon as the summer of protest tapered off. Iran's democrats are now letting their disappointment show. The new chant passed around in Internet chat rooms and heard in the streets yesterday was, "Obama, Obama—either you're with them or with us." -more
