Bernie Burke Golf Tournament

History made yesterday as 20th Annual Bernie Burke Memorial Golf Tournaments comes to a close at Parrsboro Golf Club

Sixty golfers converged on the Parrsboro Golf Club yesterday to participate in the 20th Annual Bernie Burke Memorial Golf Tournament which was decided  by the organizing committee would be the last tournament to be held. It was a very hard and emotional decision by the committee which wanted to see it go down in history. After 20 years we wanted to go out with a bang and it just did that.

A wonderful warm sunny day greeted the golfers as they registered for a tournament that many had played in for many years. Starting back 20 years as “Golfing for Parkinsons”, then moving to Cancer and for the last 10 years , named after Bernie Burke and the funds directed to The Hall in Parrsboro, which was very close to Bernie's heart.

In the last 20 years, we have raised close to $100,000.00 for the three charities which we are very proud of and felt we wanted to go out in a blaze of glory. We have had a blast raising money for these wonderful organizations. We would like to thank all the major sponsors, and the prize sponsors which have been with us right from the beginning.

To all the golfers who have come to Parrsboro each year in August to help us make this tournament such a success, we could not have done it without you, and to all the other volunteers who worked tirelessly to help as well, in particular, Dawn Coleman and her family, Norma Collinson and Doreen Wheaton, the greenskeepers at the club who made sure the course was in top notch shape for thhe tournament and to Ryan Wheaton (Bernies grandson who brought almost 20 golfers from the HRM during the awards celebration, several of the board of directors of the Hall arrived and Rob Bentley, Board Chair spoke of the association’s appreciation for the funds that have been raised at the hall, to the tune of $50,000.00 from this tournament.

At this time a tree was presented to Nancy, Brenda and Trish as a thank-you for all their hard work. The tree will be planted at The Parrsboro Golf Course and will have an appropriate plaque will be placed beside it.
