Introduction

The Great Land Choral Society (GLCS) was formed by a group of choral enthusiasts, mostly of Chinese ethnicity, in 1995. Its first performance was a famous modern Chinese choral series “The Yellow River Cantata” which was extremely well-received.

For just over a dozen years, as a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization, the Great Land Choral Society has been performing regularly in the Dallas Fort-Worth Metroplex for audiences of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Currently GLCS has over 50 members in soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections.

Today, GLCS is one of the most influential choral societies among the local Asian communities. Its mission is to preserve Chinese music heritage, promote cultural exchange and enrich multi-cultural activities among the ethnic Chinese and other communities. It holds several concerts a year, and provides various community services. Audience to each performance ranges from 700 to 2,000.

GLCS members, mostly professionals and also includes ethnic Americans, practice regularly on a biweekly basis, and more often prior public performances. It is now under the baton of its third conductor, and continuously strives for better musicianship and performing skills by taking on more and more challenging pieces.

Its repertoire usually features a wide variety of choral, group and solo works, including baroque, romantic and modern masterpieces of maestros such as Handel, Beethoven, Bizet, Donizetti, Verdi…etc., as well as traditional and modern Chinese and Asian choral pieces. Its concerts have been well received by the audience and supported by local communities.

During the recent years, GLCS has successfully held several very well-attended concerts, including “The Celebration of 60th Anniversary of World War II Victory” in May 2005, at The Eisemann Center in Richardson, joined by local performing groups such as Dallas Asian American Youth Orchestra (DAAYO) and several choirs. It also performs at the Association of Chinese Professionals Foundation’s Mid-Autumn Festival Performing Arts Show at the end of September every year, also at The Eisemann Center.

As a group of volunteers, GLCS and its members have been providing community services by supporting various events in schools, churches, senior citizen homes, community organizations, and for charity initiatives such as Katrina fund-raising campaign…etc. GLCS is proud to be able to actively contribute to the local communities at large.

In July 2007, GLCS joined forces with two other local choirs and choirs from China, one from Taiwan and the other from Fujian, in a choral festival, as the five choirs gave a free marquee concert to music lovers in the DFW area a wide variety of well-prepared masterpieces. In December 2007, GLCS also provided a successful annual concert free to public.
