The Great Land Choral Society was founded in 1995 by a group of Chinese American choral enthusiasts in the Dallas area, Texas, who formed a 100-member choir and, for the first time in southern United States, the Yellow River Cantata was successfully performed. Subsequent to another successful performance in September 1996, the Great Land Choral Society (GLCS) was formally established.
During the following twenty plus years, GLCS has performed many choral works during festival events, annual concerts, community celebrations and overseas performance tours. It has participated in notable historical events and performances, including the return of Hong Kong to China, victory celebrations of Anti-Japanese War, Spring Festivals, Mid-Autumn Festivals and more. Its members have also participated in joint performances with other reputable choirs from Mainland China, Taiwan, and the United States.
GLCS is now the largest and most prominent choir in the Chinese community of the Dallas area, whose membership has attracted numerous enthusiasts of diverse backgrounds from the Chinese community. It not only serves as a cultural bonding within the Chinese diaspora to preserve Chinese cultural heritage, but also acts as an ambassador between the Chinese community and other communities, within and beyond the Dallas area.
GLCS has also held performance tours to Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Taipei, Fuzhou, Vienna, Hamburg and Denver, and its concerts have been acclaimed and covered by numerous major media outlets, including CCTV of China. Since 2014 many members of GLCS have also participated in performances in the US and European cities a modern Chinese cantata commemorating sacrifice by Chinese youth during the Cultural Revolution. Thanks to its dedicated musical directors throughout the years, GLCS has been expanding its choral repertoire to include Chinese, western, contemporary, classical and ethnic choral works.
GLCS has been active in serving the communities of Texas, as it regularly performs at local and regional cultural events and multicultural festivals, while its members are active participants in community services, from disaster relief efforts, to donation events and visits to senior living facilities.
Today, GLCS is formally established as a non-profit chorus with more than 80 devoted members, under the baton of Ellie Lin and with pianist Se-won Kim. The dedication and passion of its members and leadership gives it a strong vitality and youthfulness to reach out and share its love for choral music beyond borders.
