Abortion Totals
There were 289 abortions on Guam for Calendar Year 2016, up from 263 abortions in 2015. Click here for copy of Abortion Reports from 2008 to 2016. 289 abortions in 2016 equal one abortion on average every 1.3 days. Given the Guam average of 3400 births per year, 289 abortion in 2016 means one out of every 12 pregnancies end in abortion.

Number of Abortions in 2016 by Age
While there continues to be much focus on preventing unwanted pregnancy among teens, teens are the least likely demographic to procure an abortion.

More abortions are procured by women identifying themselves as single. However, on Guam there is a high incidence of cohabitation making it difficult to determine how many woman are actually single.

NOTE: The Dilation & Extraction (D&E) method is currently the subject of legislation in many states which have banned abortions after 20 weeks based on scientific evidence that the fetus is capable of feeling pain. The D&E method involves the dismemberment of the unborn child as per the graphic below. A bill was introduced in the Guam Legislature in 2010 to ban abortions after 20 weeks, but it was never acted upon.

Other Notes:
Contraception is seen as a solution to abortion. However, the National Abortion Federation reports via the Guttmacher Institute: " half of all women getting abortions report that contraception was used during the month they became pregnant."
