From The Esperansa Project
April 23, 2014

It is no secret that the largest number of aborted babies in America today are those who have been diagnosed in the womb with some possible "defect".

For those of us who have children with these supposed "defects", we see a very different side of life. We see them as a gift. At the same time we understand the special needs these children and the parents of these children require.

To this end PEP - Parents Empowering Parents - was begun. PEP is a new non-profit disability organization designed to help families of individuals with disabilities through training, advocacy and support. And this weekend PEP is sponsoring a "Sunset 5K".

The following information is copied from the Guam Pacific Daily News article as found here:

The race is April 27 at the Chamorro Village front parking lot. Show time is 4:15 p.m., and go time is 5 p.m.

There will be two race courses: one for the traditional 5K family run/walk/wheel, and a second "special needs" course that is a shorter route designed to accommodate wheel chairs, white canes, walkers and other individuals who would prefer this course.

The Sunset 5K Family Run/Walk/Wheel is a disability awareness event and fundraiser for Parents Empowering Parents' upcoming disability training conference in May 2014 with keynote speaker Jo Mascorro. She is "an independent consultant who provides training throughout the nation in areas specific to behavior intervention practices, communication strategies, parenting skills, and programming for students who experience severe/profound disabilities (birth-adult)," according to the website for the Pacific Rim International Conference on Disability and Diversity.

The prices for the Sunset 5K Family Run/Walk/Wheel are $10 per person or $30 for a family/group of four. The price is $15 per person on race day.

Tickets for the Sunset 5K Family Run/Walk/Wheel can be purchased at Hornet Sports, or call Leone Rohr from PEP at 929-4157.

There will be prizes, T-shirts and a raffle at the end of the race.
