It is with great sadness that the CCGC announces the passing
of Shirlee Whitcomb. She was the single most influential, important and iconic
figure in the world of pageantry on the West Coast, as well as being honored, respected and
treasured through-out the world.
She was one of the early leaders and board member for the
California Color Guard Circuit. She served as judges’ coordinator, having
mentored and trained many of our current judges. She provided many clinics and
training sessions which help the circuit grow and flourish. Her joy, insight,
mentorship, and knowledge touched generations of performers.
She was one of the founders of Winterguard International and
served as their Director of Education and Director of Color Guard Development. Because
of her efforts and contributions to the color guard activity, she was inducted into
inaugural class of the WGI Hall of Fame in 1992.
Shirlee was a founding member of the Western Band
Association. She worked tirelessly with the Central Valley Guard and Percussion
Circuit and the San Joaquin Color Guard and Percussion Review.
Shirlee dedicated her life to mentoring hundreds of directors,
instructors and judges. We are so very grateful for her love, guidance, passion
and support she has so generously given to color guard, drum corps and marching
