1066 The name Dorrell arrived in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. They were originally from Airel, in La Manche, Normandy, France and it is from the local form of this name, D'Airel, meaning "from Airel," that their name derives.

Spelling variations include: Darrell, Dorrell, Dayrell, Darrel, Darell, Darel and others.
Rusher name is of German origin. Spelling variations include: Rausch, Rauscher, Rausche, Rauschert, Rusch, Rusche, Ruschle, Ruscher, Raush, and more.

First found in Austria, where this family name became a prominent contributor to the development of the district from ancient times.

1300s Dorrell family living in Yorkshire, England hovering in social status between high-ranking Yeomen and Squires. Very early on they were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguised assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 CE. - - -
1400s Family moves to Worcestershire, England - - -
1600s Emigration to the New World - Religious backdrop: Ireland is almost entirely Roman Catholic inhabited by peoples from the main continent of Europe. England had broken away from "the church" when King Henry VIII formed the Church of England but still largely based on Catholicism. Protestantism had spread across much of Europe and was predominant in Scotland.
1603 - - Queen Elizabeth I (Church of England) dies and is succeded by James VI (Protestant), King of Scotland, and becomes King James I of England. Ireland being Catholic posed two issues with England: one, King James favored the spread of his theology, Protestantism; and two, England did not want a close neighbor like Ireland to hold something important like religion in common with its enemies.

Irish uprising were common and for many years England had tried to subdue the island against the Irish resistance to its rule. There had been many attempts over the years to transplant English settlers to Ireland in an attempt to "infiltrate" and "control" the Irish people and their society...but these had all failed.

By 1603 Lord Mountjoy had ruthlessly subdued the Irish by destruction of food, houses, cattle and defeat on the battlefield. The hardest hit by Lord Mountjoy's destructive ways was the old "kingdom" of Ulster consisting of nine counties in the north part of the island. King James claimed this as an English plantation and encouraged (or forced) Scots and English to settle and rebuild that region.
1606 - - First Ulster colonies are settled. By 1640 there would be over 100,000 settlers, mostly Scottish, in the Ulster plantation.
- - Jamestown settlement in the Virginia area of the Americas is founded.
1609 - - King James I informs the Privy of Scotland they are "allowed" to participate in the great adventure settlement in northern Ireland. I believe the Shields lived in either the Lowlands of Scotland or the northern reaches of England and sometime between 1609 and 1640 moved to the Ulster Plantation in Ireland. -
1625 - - King James I dies and his son Charles I is crowned king. Charles is anti-Presbyterian and pro Church of England. He begins a serious effort to force the Church of England down the throats of all his subjects. Puritans and Scottish resist for the survival of Presbyterianism.
1630 Thomas Dorrell makes exploration trip as part of the "17 Gentlemen Adventurers" who made the trip with Lord Baltimore's two brothers - Puritans flee the religious persecution of King Charles I and establish the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the New World.
1637 One of the first settlers was John Darrell in Boston, Massachusetts and later moved to Salem - - -
- - - Irish rebellion begins
- - - England is in Civil War -- mainly over the religious issues of the day. Puritanism and Oliver Cromwell against the Church of England and King Charles I. At the same time the Irish Catholics rise up and rebel against the Presbyterian north…thousands are killed.
1643 Another early settler was William Darrell in Virginia. - Oliver Cromwell campaign to crush the Irish rebellion. Estimates are that Cromwell's army kills one third of the Irish population. Cromwell banishes two Shields brothers to the island of Barbados in the West Indies.
- - - Cromwell succeeds and Charles I is beheaded. He then subdues Scotland and turns his sights to the ongoing rebellion in Ireland where he crushes the rebellion and Scots' immigration resumes to northern Ireland.
1653 George and Elizabeth Dorrell "transported" to Maryland (Anne Arundel County) - - -
1654 Moses and Mary Darrell come from England to Virginia.

Paul Jonsson Mullica, Margaret Andersdotter and their children, including Christina Palsdotter "Mullica" (born in Mora, Halsingland, Sweden) emigrate to "New Sweden aboard the ship "Eagle."
