OUR AFFILIATE(S)

The Illustrious Choral Group: Voix & Tambours d'Haïti, Inc
President: Jocelyne Gay
Maestro-Composer: Antoine Chéry
Playwright-Director: Wills Paul

More than 33 years of unchallenged performances

Voix & Tambours d’Haïti is a group of about 20 members presently, but throughout its 33 years or more existence (1973) it has known different names and great many members.  Talented artists of all denominations joined the brilliant Composer-Director from Gombo Club (Carrefour) Antoine Chéry, and they constitute a family whose sole purpose is to collect, maintain, and preserve two precious components of our culture, its drama and folklore melodies.

As I mentioned Antoine Chéry, the maestro, I must also allude to all those devoted members, past and present, dead or alive, who unselfishly contributed to the everlasting success of Voix & Tambours d’Haïti.  The troupe itself did not just appear in thin air; it has a history as concise as follows (This list only reflects choral groups):

Voix & Tambours d’Haïti, Inc. is the extension of many successive choral groups, beginning:

1945 - Coeur Aïda [Founded by Simon Benjamin][1

1947 - Troupe Nationale Folklorique [Founded by Lina Maton-Blanchet and Jean Léon Destiné]

      1948 - CAD and SNAD

1956 - La Compagnie des Griots of Toto Bissainthe

(?) - “Le Vaudou à Paris” of Maltide Beauvoir

      1962 - Caraco Bleu

      1962 - Chœur Déjean,

         - Chœur des Cousins,

         - Chœur Michel Dégrotte,

         - Chœur Simidor

      - Voix et Tambours d’Haïti (Not to be confused with the Voix & Tambours d’Haïti Inc., in New York).

      1963 - Culture Chantiers

1966 - Lambi Club (Robert Bauduy)

1963 - Gombo Club: (Formerly “Les gentlemen de Carrefour”)

1965 - Etoiles Caraïbes (Sergo François and Jean Wilson)

1965 - Vaksin (No information was available about this group)

1965 - Sosyete Koukouy (Jan Mapou)

           (?) - Simbi Club

           (?) - Jeunes Talents de l’Art

           (?) - Twoup Ayida

1969 - Troupe Kouidor (Syto Cavé)

1977 - Voix et Tambours d’Haïti Inc. (Formerly “Troupe Antoine Chéry”)

      1977 - Gwoup Sanmba

                              1978 - Voix & Harmony (Paul Déjean)

To this point, Voix & Tambours d’Haïti Inc. (New York) and Voix & Harmony (Canada), also Zansèt (Cuba) are the only three oldest and remaining choral groups representing Ayiti; yet, none of the Ayitian governments has ever acknowledged their work or honored their existences.

THE QUESTION IS: ARE WE EVER GOING TO THANK THOSE PIONEERS?
