  The Way of the LORD

  • "For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep THE WAY OF THE LORD, to do righteousness and justice ..."  Gen.18:19
  • "Good and upright is the LORD; therefore He teaches sinners in the way.  The humble He guides in justice, and the humble He teaches HIS WAY."   Psa.25:8-9
  • "Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in YOUR WAY."   Psa.119:37
  • "...and did not walk in THE WAY OF THE LORD."    2 Kings 21:22

We have a choice between the broad and narrow ways.
Jesus says that the narrow way leads to life (Matt.7:13-14).  Later in the first century early Christians became known as, 'the Way' (Acts 19:23, 24:14, 22).
In 2 Peter 2:2 we have the one true way contrasted with false prophets and their many 'destructive ways'.

The LORD'S Way is mentioned many times in Scripture.
The  'wrong way' is called the broad way which leads to destruction.
How ironic that the very popular street in New York where all the 'look at me' people strut their stuff is called, 'Broadway'.

Here are some more, 'Way of the LORD' verses:
    • "Teach me Your way, O LORD."  Psa.27:11, 86:11
    • "That Your way may be known on earth..."  Psa.67:2

    • "that the LORD your God may show us the way..."   Jer.42:3
    • "But you have departed from the way..."  Mal.2:8

The direction of East in the Bible

The East is used as the source or symbol of punishment/evil in the Old Testament but in the New Testament 'the East' is used as a symbol of promise about Jesus and His return.

In Old Testament times the East defined punishment or evil

The punishing East wind from hot desert regions  Gen.41:6, 23, 27; Exod.10:13,17:10; Job 27:21, 38:24; Isa.27:8; Jer.18:17; Ezek.19:12; Hos.13:15; Jonah 4:8

Invading nations from the East  Judges 6:3; Ezek.25:4; Hab.1:9

East wind destroys ships  Psa.48:7; Ezek.27:26

'Eastern ways' corrupting Israel   Isa.2:6; Job 15:2

'Bird of prey' from the East   Isa.46:11

In New Testament times the East speaks of promise and of Jesus' return

Son of Righteousness rising (in the East) Mal.4:2 (the last chapter of the OT is a good intro to NT times)

"But to you who fear My name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings  ... "  Mal.4:2

Wise men from the East  Matt.2:1

His star in the East  Matt.2:2

Jesus' return is likened to lightning from the East  Matt.24:27

"For as the lightning comes from the East and flashes to the West, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be."  Matt.24:27

The human heart in the Bible

  • "... for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with ALL YOUR HEART and with all your soul."    Deut.13:3
The Bible pioneered many phrases about the heart as the seat of human emotion.  People in biblical times imagined the heart was the source of our thoughts.  Even though we know about the brain, we still use heart phrases today like, 'heavy heart', 'soft hearted', 'to set your heart on something' and 'broken heart'.

The word heart appears over 900 times in the Bible.
Here is a list of just some 'heart verses' from the Bible.  You will notice how some of them are still in common use today.   Be sure to check these 'heart verses' in your Bible, because many of them carry valuable spiritual lessons for us.

  The eyes have it

  • "The lamp of the body is the eye."   Matt.6:22
The human eye is a miracle of creation.  The eyes are silent communicators able to show  an amazing number of good or evil human moods or emotions with just a glance.
This is why Jesus calls the eye, 'the lamp of the body', because your eyes can convey so much about you.

People sometimes say that a person's eyes 'lit up' when they experienced something that made them instantly happy.

The alternative medicine known as 'iridology' has shown that eye colours, patterns and iris characteristics can reveal much about your inner health.
One of the amazing things is the ability to make direct eye contact with another person who is some distance away, even when they are with a group of people.

The eyes are mentioned over 500 times in the Bible.
The eye and sight are used in the Bible in the spiritual sense to depict a person's 'insight' and understanding of the things of God:
                                See Eph.1:18; 1 John 2:11 and Rev.3:18

Here are just a few 'eye verses' from the Bible
    • "The eyes of your understanding being enlightened."  Eph.1:18
    •  "For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth..."  2 Chron.16:9
    • "This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvelous in our eyes."  Psa.118:23
    • "Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things."  Psa.119:37
    • "Unto You I lift up my eyes."  Psa.123:1
    • "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD."  Gen.6:8
    • "Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water..."  Gen.21:19
    • "...a heart to  perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear"  Deut.29:4
    • "...give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways."  Prov.23:26
    • "The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous..."  1 Pet.3:12
    • "The light of the eyes rejoices the heart."  Prov.15:30
    • "Every way of a man is right in his own eyes"  Prov.21:2
    • "A man with an evil eye hastens to riches."  Prov.28:22
    • "Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes."  Isa.5:21
    • "He who winks with his eye causes trouble."  Prov.10:1, Prov.6:12-15, 16:30
    • "...the eyes of the LORD , which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth."   Zech.4:10
    • "...His eyes like a flame of fire"  Rev.1:14
    • "...anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see."  Rev.3:18
So, along with having our natural eyes tested from time to time we all need to also test our spiritual eyesight on a regular basis.
    • "The eyes of the LORD are over the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry."  Psa.34:15
