Daylighting can lead to energy savings while it also provides outdoor views and has positive non-visual effects, still largely unknown. The dynamic variation of luminance patterns, combined with shading devices, illuminance levels, space configuration, outdoor views and personal subjective factors, all shape the complex influence of daylight on visual comfort, perception, preferences and health.
A systematic categorization of glare and non-visual assessment approaches with respect to standardized tests, sets of environmental conditions, temporal factors and space-occupant configurations, among other parameters, will lead to better understanding of these phenomena and, ultimately, to more robust metrics to characterize discomfort glare, daylight preferences, and non-visual effects.
