TRAINING

If you want to talk about training please contact the Training Officer (See contacts). If you would like to book any of our training courses, or if you can’t make the advertised dates then please contact the bookings officer (see contacts).

STARTING UP, ABSOLUTE BEGINNER OR JUST NEW TO THE CLUB?

Your first step is a Thameswey Start course. This is designed to let you see if paddling works for you. No pressure, just friendly faces and helpful hints. What a great way to put your toe in the water! We expect all new members to attend a Start course, regardless of ability and experience, as this is used as a general introduction to the club.

Both open canoe and kayak sessions are covered within the Start course, so they are also a good way to introduce yourself to a new discipline if you feel like it. Start courses are held according to demand and availability of membership.

You will need: a change of clothing, a towel and suitable footwear: eg plimsolls, wetsuit boots or beach shoes.

Dates: Further dates to be confirmed

Course: Adults £10, Children £5 (includes 2 weeks temporary membership, all essential kit – boat, paddle, buoyancy aid, helmet and BCU Start certificate)

ONGOING TRAINING

Thameswey runs a range of courses for its members. You will only be able to book these courses when your membership has been confirmed.
Our training activities range from the first paddle strokes of Canoe England One Star through to Safety & Rescue courses. The more you learn, the more you’ll get out of your paddling and we’ve got a great track record for helping people learn.

Our training courses provide support and encouragement for paddlers of all abilities to have fun paddling and make sure that they can do it safely.

We are introducing a new way of organising our training programme this year.  There will be a range of short modules which will allow you to choose how you develop your skills. You can work towards BCU personal paddling awards, or you can take the modules that interest you; e.g. you could stick to the open canoe module all the way through!

Some modules have pre-requisites, please see below. This is so that you are starting the module at the right level.

Everyone progresses at different speeds and in different ways. Some people will need further practice after the module finishes, particularly at two and three star levels.  We will support you to continue to develop your skills in our supervised sessions, pool sessions, and trips. Just let our coaches know what you are aiming for.

We will provide paddlers with a personal log book to record their learning, progress and details of trips and other activities.  We will also keep a club record of achievements.

COURSE FEES: The costs of each taught module is only £20 per participant. If a participant books two modules at the same time then the cost is £35 for both.  At two star and above additional assessment and certification fees apply.

The modules will be delivered three times across the summer period.  The dates for each set of modules are listed in the table below.  All sessions are at Lake 32 unless otherwise stated.
