Health Promoting School

We have a healthy eating policy in our school and encourage all pupils to bring lunches that are healthy to school. We run many programmes to help teach children the importance of healthy eating.

Health Promoting Schools Certificate 2016/17

We are delighted to announce we have just been awarded our Health Promoting Schools Certificate for the school year 2016/17. Well done to all pupils for bringing fruit and vegetable filled lunch boxes all year and adhering to our health eating policy.

We investigated how much sugar is in fizzy drinks, fruit juices and smoothies. We had great fun and learned that there is a lot of sugar in some drinks!

Incredible Edibles

Here are Cullen NS we are taking part in the program Incredible Edibles. The aim of the initiative is to communicate the importance of food origin and of eating Irish potatoes, fruit and vegetables for a healthy diet - in an interactive way. Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles educates primary school pupils about the importance of increasing their consumption of Irish potatoes, fruit and vegetables with the aim of tackling Ireland’s obesity issues. The project is also set up so that students take these important messages home to parents.

We planted potatoes, lettuce, chives, turnip and carrot. We had great fun.

Food Dudes

Cullen NS is very proud of having been a successful health promoting school since 2011. All staff have worked continuously to highlight the importance of healthy living to all of the pupils in our school. Health refers to spiritual, social, emotional and physical health. Our health promotion committee, under the leadership of Ms. Moran, are working to provide a safe and health enhancing environment which will reinforce the important lessons of health promotion.

The function of a school is to 'promote the moral, spiritual, social and personal development of students and provide healthy education for them (The Education Act 1998). Therefore, the school is proud to have placed such emphasis on health promotion over the past five years.

Cullen NS was chosen to participate in the Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme for the school year 2016-17 and we were delighted to do so!

Food Dudes is a programme developed by the Food and Activity Research Unit at Bangor University, Wales, to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables both in school and at home. It is based on positive role models (the Food Dudes characters), repeated tasting and rewards. In large-scale studies in schools in England, Wales and Ireland, the programme has been shown to be effective and results long-lasting across the primary age range, regardless of gender, school size, geographic and socio-economic factors. It is ultimately designed to enable children to enjoy eating healthy diets, and to create a healthy eating culture within schools.

The programme in Ireland received a “counteracting obesity” award from the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2006. Funding has been made available by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the EU School Fruit Scheme for the national implementation of the Food Dudes Programme. The programme is managed by Bord Bia and to date over 2,000 primary schools have participated.

For more information see http://www.fooddudes.ie

The programme has allowed the children of Cullen NS to sample and enjoy a variety of foods during the month of October. The healthy food samples were provided to the children and they received rewards such as water bottles, lunch boxes, pencil sharpeners etc. We have seen the positive impact this programme has had on the lunch boxes of the children and we would encourage all parents to continue to fill those lunch boxes with fruit and vegetables. Children will continue to receive certificates for bringing fruit and vegetables over the coming months.

Food Dudes finished for another year! We are looking forward to next year already!
